Should everyone be at second level before entering the mines? I don't
have a magic-user - Xzar and Montaron pushed Jaheira too far.
How did you get to the mines without being 2nd level? Didnt you do all
quests in Candlekeep or at the Friendly Arm inn before going further?
Then you did not only miss experience for levels but some good items too.
I did ... every one. I just headed north from the Nashkel Carnival and
cleared out that area, which just pushed everyone to second level,
though Imowen was already second.
IIRC when I originally played this Minsc was also second level, matching
my character's experience when we me. Oh well ... getting pin cushioned
by kobold arrows now in the mines so we're all good :-)
Try a solo run with a thief or cleric. Should be level 3 or so by the time
you hit Nashkel. Skip Nashkel and do the non-required areas first, and you'll
be level 4 or 5.

It was best -- but was it right?

Your post reminded me that I want to solo a Half-Orc Cleric\Thief one
of these days.
I tend to grab Minsc and go rescue Dynaheir *before* trying the Nashkel
Mines. Characters are often level 3 or better by the time they're back.

Dynaheir - IIRC she is in the gnoll fortress a few areas west of Nashkel?
Is she a mage? I'm on the third level of the mines wishing for one right
about now ...
Yes, to both. Bottom left corner of the world map.
Right now I'm trying (for the first time) a solo monk in BG2. Thinking about
switching to BG1 and restarting from there; it's been a LONG time since I
solo'd *anything* in BG1 (too much of a PITA for most classes).

Hmmm. Solo in BG. You must do quite a bit of running and using ranged
weapons, I'm guessing? Considering how easily two wolves can take down
Imowen and the primary PC that's quite a challenge!

So far I've only soloed fighter types. It isn't that bad for them at
least.
But a level 1 mage? Every gibberling I come across would make me
nervous.
Depends on the class I use. Warrior or priest, I roll until I can get these
stats or better:
Warrior Priest
STR 18/75 18
CON 18 15
DEX 18 18
INT 9 9
WIS 9 18
CHA 9 9
(It's generally easier for me to roll the warrior.) Those wolves go down
before I do. With enough healing potions, I might even take on an ogre.
But thief or mage, yeah, lots of "RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!" especially if playing
a multiclass mage. Never tried soloing a monk at all, and while I'm not
having a hard time with it in BG2, a solo level 1 monk will probably be...
difficult. As Dan Simpson says in his FAQ, a monk "is a veritable liability
until level fifteen or so."

You are mentally incapable of answering a straight question, aren't you?

Yep. I remember reading somewhere (maybe it was that FAQ) that monks
are weak at first but they become very powerful later on.
Most powerful class in the game, by a lot, and that doesn't even include
TOB's high-level abilities. That's assuming you *live* that long; at level 1
they're like a walking chew toy. The real power starts to show around level 5
or so.

How goes the first line of defense against sanity?

Ok I just added monk to my 'solo this class one of these days' list.
It's pretty interesting in BG2 so far.
I did the slavers' compound, then bounced over to Watcher's Keep (TOB) and
did the first level (which was a PITA -- had to cheat a bit and use a bunch
of mage scrolls just to survive long enough to get to the second level), and
now I'm back in Athkatla, leveling up to get some more immunities. I plan on
dealing with the eyeless cult, then doing the bridge district's quests, and
then maybe I'll be strong enough to take on level 2 of Watcher's Keep. If
not, I'll probably take care of Nalia's quest.

I'm strong and fearless only 'cause I got rock-n-roll.
