Stinking cloud..... not quite so good however does knock enemies out cold
quite often making fights a lot easier

Well, I do think Stinking Cloud's implementation is a lot better in BG
than in PoR1. Its range and duration are far greater.
It does suffer under the direct competition of its fellow evocation
spell, 'Web', which also immobilises, but Web imposes a saving throw
penalty. Still, Stinking Cloud does have its uses.
A standard trick in BG1 is to have Animated Dead up front, and if they
can't manage on their own, help them out with a Stinking Cloud: the
skeletons are not affected by it. Once, in an online campaign, I knew
of a certain dwarf who would run head-on into my mage's Stinking
Clouds. (Hi Colin :-) His Fighter's saving throws and natural
resistance to poison caused him to shrug off its effects.
Spiders, immune by Web, can be stopped by a Stinking Cloud.
IIRC, I think that in p&p d&d, 'larger than man-sized' opponents don't
mind Web either. But they do have to breathe, so Stinking Cloud gets'
em.
Cloud Kill has been heavily debated here. Casting it from outside the
target's viewing range, will cause it to just sit there in the cloud
and die.
This is generally regarded as abusing the AI, but there's no doubt
that it's very effective.
Suppose you have a Fighter/Mage and he wades into a tough fight.
Protect him from the Stinking Cloud/Cloudkill (Minor Globe in BG1,
Spell Immunity in BG2) and it only helps to make life more difficult
for his opponents.
Each spell has its uses. Cloudkill nor Stinking Cloud are bad spells
at all.
Cheers,
James
Cloudkill (love those wands) also makes a handy backup 'mass spellcaster
interruption' device/technique, very handy as a first move of ambush (or
after shadow door).
Stinking Cloud and Web (don't know about Grease) won't actually harm the
victims, so it's safe to use in a city/building.
To cut a long story short, I don't have a Cleric, but I imagine that if you
summon something and Haste it while your Cleric casts 'Free Action', you
could make quite the mess indeed.

Actually it's a bug. The Wand of Cloudkill is supposed to be affected
by magic resistance. Wand are just spells (in this case Cloudkill)
trapped in a stick. You will notice that the spell itself is affected
by magic resistance.
Of course feel free to rationalize the bug by saying it's just a cloud
of acid/poison/whatever rather than magic.

These cheap foreign imports. Still, can't complain.
How about a Wand Of Skull Trap?
I believe you'll find that only the Cloudkill wand works with Drows, due to
a bug. Cloudkill doesn't ignore MR when a mage casts that spell. Someone,
_please_ tell me that this bug is fixed in ToB...

Far as I can tell, no. This was from one of my pre-TOB game files, don't
know if it still happens with newly created TOB games.
And yes, it does work against Demogorgon.

I used Stinking Cloud quite a bit in BG1 - just the thing for dealing
with basilisks.
