Kinda disappointing? I turned to 640x480, everything was just too small!
What do ya think of the graphics? I haven't turned 3D on, confident that
everything will crash. Is it much better with 3D on?

ack!! this is really starting to annoy me now. I've heard nothing but the
exact same argument over the past couple of days - 'wahh I want big chunky
characters with...with stuff!! LIKE IN QUAKE 3!!!!'

I shall now explain...I think. and hopefully put this to rest.

this, is your screen (mine really but...for the sake of argument, it's your
screen)

_1024__
| |7
| |6
|______|8

this is baldur's gate 1 running on your screen, represented by the /'s (I'm
not trying to be 100% accurate with screen-size fractions here, so bear with
me)

_1024__
| ////// |7
| ////// |6
| ////// |8

notice the blank areas - these represent wasted space on your screen. why
is the space wasted? - because bg1 is running in 640x480 and your monitor is
capibile of 1024x768 - thus bg1 has to re-size your screen res. this causes
things to get seriously funky (if you're not using a 640x480 default screen
res that is - you can prolly get away with 800x600 too though, but not
anything higher than that) & because your monitor is considerably bigger
than what's being displayed, you'll notice that the characters are on the
large side, and you'll more easily be able to pick out pixelly areas, the
viewable area is very small, and most of the game has a 'zoomed' look to
it...yah?

however, at long last along comes mr. happy
multi-res-capible-infinity-engine with bg2! huzzah! now, bg2's default res
is 800x600, yeah? so... (again I'm not attempting to be completely accurate,
this ascii is just to illustrate my point a bit easier) this is roughly how
much of your screen it's using
_1024__
| /////// |7
| /////// |6
|/////// |8

the result of this is that the characters aren't *SMALLER* they are, in
fact, the exact same size as they've always been, it's just that with the
higer res, you're able to see more & the game doesn't have the 'zoomed'
effect as badly as it had in bg1, because the game res is closer to your
screen's default res. but why stop there? lets dance into the land of happy
happy nymphs and theoretically-supported resolutions!!! (except for of
course, the inventory screens and the like, which are all in a much smaller
res. anyone know why this is, btw?)
_1024__

|/////////|6
|/////////|8

see, now my game res is fitting my screen res. and we have perfect harmony
between the two, which is the way things should be.

in short, your characters aren't smaller at all - they never get bigger or
smaller (unless you're running in a screen res that your monitor can't
handle--ie. 1024x768-game-res on an 800x600 monior-- then you're just asking
for trouble). bg2 is just fitting your screen res a bit better than bg1
did. in return, you get much better detail on characters, a good example
is - does anyone remember in iwd, how you'd have wacky outlines on some of
your characters when they walked over snow?

right, I've prolly made a few mistakes up there, but it's 5am and
it's been half-an-hour since I've played bg2, so I'm going to do that right
now...

if anyone wants me, I shall be hiding in my fort...

But the characters ARE smaller on your screen. The view is zoomed out, thus
the characters are smaller. In relation to the game world, they're the same
size. In relation to the real world (come back to the real world, Ping!),
they are smaller.

I think the graphics are great! I run in 800*600 with no interfaces and the
game looks fantastic.

Well, I guess I should thank you because you spent alot of time writing this
msg.

I know nothing about Quake3, don't play such games.

You are basically saying that it's better to have 800x600? My usual screen
res. is 1024x...don't remember.

So, turn to 640 if its too small :) We're not stopping you.

800x600 was a little too big for me.

640x480 is AWFUL on a 22" monitor, so I'm glad they included options to
change resolution....

As for the character size - making them bigger would have been a very bad
idea(tm).
