Greetings, folks!. It's been a while since I've posted here, and it's good to
see the group still going strong.
I'm playing Icewind Dale, with Heart of Winter, and I'm wondering what's the
best armor for a bard. Is there a suit that lets a bard cast spells while
wearing it?

Elven chainmail, at least. There should be a suit in Severed Hand.

I believe bards can wear Elven mail.

Thanks. Anyone know if this is a random item?

As far as I know, it's a random item. I've never found it, and I've had two
different parties clear out the Severed Hand (I was really pissed about this
, too!). You can always download Dale Keeper, and if you don't find the
armor, you can add it to your inventory that way.

Just so you know, you can change armor in combat playing IWD without any
sort of penalties (as far as I know, Heart of Winter hasn't changed this).
So if you find a good suit of chain mail, have your bard wear the chain mail
when you need him to be fighting and then just take it off when you need him
to cast spells (keep some sort of robe or whatnot in his inventory if
possible). There are lots of random items to be found throughout IWD which
will give bonuses to armor class or certain protections/resistances.

Yes. Actually, there are two places where you can pick up a random suit of
elven chain, the chances being about 25% per place, so you stand about a 50%
chance of walking out of severed hand with a suit of elven chain.

It is possible to ensure you get a set if you're willing to do enough
reloads. You just need to know where the item you want might be spawned,
then check and reload if it's not there. In the case of the elven chain,
this isn't that hard, actually. The items are generated the first time your
party enters a new map. There's a great walkthrough by Dan Simpson on
http://www.gamefaqs.com
that mentions where the suits show up.

I've played two games and both times I have found the Elven Chainmail of
the Hand +3 in the same chest.

I believe there are 2 elven chainmail items.
One is a static item that can be found in the Severed Hand, and the other is a
random item that can be found on Kaylessa when you kill her.

Both are random, actually.
