Does anybody know whether any of the characters within BG1 or 2 have
appeared in any of the Forgotten Realms novels. The most likely suspects are
people like Elminster or Bhaal I suppose.

Well characters that I've come accross or mentioned in the Forgotton Realms
books:
Drizzit Du Urden
King Bruenor
All the Gods(incl Bhaal)

i'm sure there are more, but they escape me at the moment

Kelemvor and Cyric from the Avatar trilogy. You don't actually meet them
though.

Well I'd guess that most of the characters from BG 1 appear in the novel
Baldur's Gate... :)

Other than that - Oberon the wizard from BG City is in one of the Icewind
Dale Trilogy, which also of course, includes Drizzt. Elminster as you said
would be another, as would Bhaal and pretty much every other god.

I would also guess that if any other novels have been centred around
Baldur's Gate City, then some or all of the Grand Dukes would have been
mentioned, similarly with Athkatla... and specifically with the Shadow
Thieves - I would have thought their leader would have been mentioned now
and again.

That's all I can think of right now though....
