My party is still too weak to take on the major enemies here - one time a
bandit called Neville wiped me out before I could get a shot off, and then
there's that nasty bridge crossing with the Ogre Berserker and the Hobgoblin
Elite with the poisonous arrows...
I keep dying!
Still, at least Imoen & Khalid are also now Level 2 characters!
Sorry to moan, but am I missing something?

Then take the other bridge! There is a second one in the very south of
this area.

It's a start.

No, this part of the game is a bit tough, but the gnolls are
surprisingly easy to beat. O yes, just a small tip: don't pay the
Ogrillions on the bridge towards the Stronghold a dime - one of them
carries a very good item.
Have you finished the Nashkel Mines yet? And as for the xvarts....You could
pick them off with ranged weapons first, or area of effect spells. I suppose
Burning Hands would be the only one available to you then, but it might
kill/weaken off a few xvarts. You could also place your party in between the
huts or something so they can't surround you completely. And when the cave bear
arrives, DO NOT engage it in melee. Use ranged weapons.

You already have the answer. Your party is far too weak. Go finish whatever
quests you can. You'll get far more XP finishing quests than you will killing
monsters at this point. Most quests aren't very difficult, most simply require a
bit of searching and stuff.
Once you level up, you can try again. Stinking cloud works well against the
hobgobs and ogres on the bridge. Or you could use an Oil of Fiery Burning if
you've found one.
And scout ahead with Imoen. It really helps.

Cogito cogito ergo cogito sum. - I think that I think, therefore I think
that I am.
Gnolls are really very wimpy. Just hit and run with ranged weapons, and advance a
bit at a time so that you don't get half the garrison chasing you. Try not to let
them get close to you since they only use halberds or whatever.
