I need to find a decent mage/wizard for my party. At the moment, i have the
following party :
Me : Ranger
Jaheira : Fighter/Druid
Branwen : Cleric
Minsc : Ranger
Kavin : Ranger
Garrick : Bard
As you can see, i am rather light in the magic department :( I am currently
in chapter 2, and have am at Level 3. I have left Khalid and Imoen behind.
On a side note, is there any way to check to see where u have left a party
member, in case you forget ??
So, any recommendations on where i can find a good wizard mage for my party
?
I thank you in advance for your invaluable assistance
How recently did you pick up Minsc, and did you go and rescue fair Dynaheir
in the Gnoll Stronghold? If you don't, he'll turn on you sooner or later,
and if you do, you've got yourself a great mage.
Also, you could go back and pick up Imoen. She can be dual-classed to Mage
(or specialist mage) and makes an excellent magic user.
Finally, you could always develop Garrick's spellcasting abilities. He gains
spell levels one step behind mages (so he'll be able to cast 1st-level
spells once he's level 2). He won't be able to cast while wearing armour,
though, so don't try to use him as both mage and front-line fighter.
Oh, and one more thing: you're also short of a thief, which you'll regret as
chapter 2 progresses, so even if you do get Dynaheir, go back for Imoen
anyway, and keep her as a thief for now.

My suggestion:
Drop Jaheira and Garrick and get Imoen and Dynaheir. Imoen can develope
into the finest thief and and a damn good archer. Dynaheir is an invoker and
can't
memorise enchantment/charm spells , but can cast them from scrolls. Imoen
can team up with Kivan and form one hell of a fine stealth team. And I always
keep her pure thief, no dual. Equip Minsc and your lead character as fighters
(armor and melee weapons with bows as secondary) and put them at the
front, equip Kivan with bow as primary (and a bastard sword as secondary)
and put him as tail end charlie.Keep him a set of leather armor for when
you want him to stealth. Branwen can be equipped to be a pretty fair
fighter (essentially as a back up), but will do her best work when healing
the wounded. Also give her and Dynaheir slings for ranged work. I tend
to like paladins as leaders because of their combination of fighting skills
and their ability to develope cleric skills as well.
This would, imho, form close to the ideal party if your going for good.

Um, you had better hot foot it over to the Gnoll fortress because Minsc will
get pretty vexed that you have done so and you'll have a fight on your
hands. There you will get Dynaheir and she's the MU that you are looking
for.

And dump Jaheira and Garrick for those two.
Seeing as he's not been mentioned yet, I'm going to have to vote for... Xan!
Er, no, actually I'll go with Edwin. The best way to get this guy is to
pick up Minsc and do the gnoll fortress for the XP, nabbing Dynaheir as
well. Then arrange for Dynaheir to have an accident on the way back to
Nashkel (you could even let Minsc kill her, for a really good laugh, if
you're a bit of a sadist ;-)). Once back in Nashkel, I believe Edwin should
still be hanging around, so you can recruit him. He is a specialist mage
(conjurer, so he only loses divination spells, of which identify is probably
the most useful, and can be substituted with high lore or visits to
temples), and as well as bonuses for being a specialist, gets an extra spell
of each level from his special amulet. Plus, he'll also help you out with
an encounter later in the game, due to the fact he is a Red Wizard. His
constitution is fine, giving him a helping hand when it comes to hitpoints.
His disadvantages are that you must keep the party reputation below 18, or
he'll leave in disgust (he will complain if your rep is 18, but won't
leave), and if you want an evil archmagi robe, there's only one in the game,
and that is in CloakWood (but it is free, unlike buying from Thalantyr).
Basically, if you can live with his evil alignment, Edwin is the best NPC
mage in the game, in my opinion anyway.

I'd dump Garrick and pick up either Edwin or Dynaheir. You can even have both
in your party if you get Dynaheir in your party before ever talking to Edwin.
And if you have Minsc in your party, as you do, you have to go get Dynaheir
withing about 10 days or he turns on you.
The location of Mages:
Dynaheir, Invoker, Gnoll Stronghold
Edwin, Conjurer, Nashkell
Xan, Enchanter, Nashkell mines.
Xzar, Necromancer, on the map where Gorion buys the farm.
You can also dual-class Imoen to a very good thief-mage once she hits level 5
or 6 as a thief. (You just have to pick up another thief until she gets her
thief skills back.)
Also, you might want to consider Quayle, Cleric/Mage (Illusionist) AR0900,
though you can't get him until you cross the big bridge.

Quayle?! No offence to the Quayle fan club, but isn't he just begging to be
dumped off the side of the bridge into Baldur's Gate? That attitude is just
soooo annoying! Oh, and the fact his poor wisdom means he misses some of
his cleric spells, and the fact he has an annoying attitude, and the fact
his special ability is invisibility (only useable on himself) which does
little other than keep him out of harm's way, and the fact his attitude is
maddeningly annoying. Oh, did I mention I don't like his attitude?
Of course, I'm also the guy who quite likes Xzar, so maybe I'm starting to
lose it a bit. Is there anyone else who keeps Xzar as a mage in their
party?
I think that's a NO :-)

You're right about the attitude. This is my third or fourth go-round for BG,
one in which I deliberately set out to play NPCs I hadn't played before. That
meant Quayle, Skie, Viconia, et al. And after three or four go-rounds, I'm
pretty inured to their little foibles. I could almost play through to the end
with Jaheira. <reality check> Almost. </reality check>

Better yet, is there anyone who keeps Xzar *alive* as a mage?

Perhaps he ran away once too often :-)
