>What spells can Minsc use as a ranger?
I think he has Charm animal (not all that useful-he can kill a wolf in
the time it takes him to befriend it), but he's a ranger and that
means he can probably hide in shadows. I really like that ability
because you can sneak up to archers and then start your attack from
right next to them. This means the archers switch to their melee
weapons. This is a tremendous advantage since your guys wont get cut
down by arrows while charging archers. Thieves are even better at this
if they get a successfull backstab in the first time. This strategy is
one of the 2 ways to kill Black Talons. The other one involves a bit
of cheating: run into the Talons, memorize their position, reload your
last quicksave and fireball the area before you come into each
othersline of sight.
Bottom line is that Minsc kicks ass though spells arent his strong
suit.
He'll get Berserk and Charm Animal (at lvl 5 or so, I think).
Berserk gives extra damage and to-hit bonuses (I think :-) ), plus a
temporary 15 extra HP.

True. I think he also has to get next to the animal in question to
Charm it. Might as well use your cleric or mage to do it. If one of your
party members is charmed though, then Minsc can do it and that doesn't
matter.

Sure, but then you'd have to give him studded leather. Which is really
a waste since he is primarily a fighter. The AC trade off just isn't worth
it.

Yes, but then your thief will get toasted with those damn ice arrows.
And besides, most likely there will be a few BTs too far away to change to
melee weapons.

If you're willing to risk getting double the number of Black Talons,
that is.. :-) Or you could do it the conventional way and use a hidden
thief. You can get a fireball off from outside their arrow range.
Rangers do ok in that role. He doesnt have to fight them just force
them to switch weps. He can then put metal back on during the fight if
it needs be, but most of the fighting should be done by the rest of
the team.

Thats why you need a thief AND ranger, at least (more of each are
good). I admit a thief will have trouble alone against 6 Talons but he
can easily do this against Kobolds , Skeletons or Hobgoblins.

I actually want that. Twice the experience and twice the ice arrows to
loot. Since the fireball is doing the killing it doesnt really matter
if there are 6 or 12 of them in the killzone.
