The way that I understand forcing doors/locks is that it depends on the
strength of the leader at the time not the protagonist. I have tried
forcing in various situations, not just the real tough magically locked
doors, with different leaders of all different strength (including Korgan
and a character with Crom Farie) and NEVER once has it worked. I always get
" blank you have failed to force the door" where blank is the leader's name.

Has anybody ever done this? If so what is the secret?

It is not about who is the leader but about who is doing the bashing.
The stronger the character is the bigger the chance of succes.
Take note that this is only a small chance and most chests and doors need lockpicking. But
if you keep trying eventualy even you will find a chest that can be forced.

OK then how do you determine who is doing the bashing if it isn't the
leader? In a non-combat situation you can only "attack" a door or lock if
the group is selected.

No, you just select a character, select a weapon (turning the slot orange),
and click on the door/chest.

I usually select the specific party member I want to force said lock, which
is Keldorn who has a girdle of giant strength. I open lots of chests and
doors this way.
Its better to lockpick tho for the meager xp bonus.

You can also just hit the equals key "=" to select everyone, click on
the sword on menu bar at the bottom then select the chest. That way
everyone in your party will try to force the lock. Just gives you more
chances I guess, no big secret.
