My party:

Me - mage
Khalid
Jaheira
Minsc
Kivan
Imoen

I've just rescued Dynaheir and can't keep Minsc if I don't make space
for her. Is it worth kicking out Kivan for the two?

thx
Chris

I would drop khalid and jaheira and pick up a cleric and dynaheir.
Later you will probably want coran so try to figure out who you want to get
rid of later in the game.

Personaly I like the guy in front of baldurs gate who is a
cleric/illusionist

Yes, Minsc is stronger than Kivan. However if you want to just keep
dynaheir, kick out imoen (she always waits around), get minsc into a
building on his own, and then drop him. Dynaheir won't leave again
unless minsc gets to talk to her after you drop him.

In case you hadn't discovered, imoen will ALWAYS wait around to be
picked up again, so she is the 'empty square' you can use to move the
others in/out of your party (eg to check their alignment, skills,
whatever).

Drop Dynaheir (read: send her into a group of gnolls) keep minsc and kivan.
if you are a mage yourself, (as I play) I don't see the need for Dynaheir,
while Kivan' bow skills are very usefull, he has killed many powerful foes
in my game.

If you're a mage, lose Dynaheir. Kivan is a great fighter & archer.

My party:
Me (mage/theif - sneak up & fireball enemies from the shadows!)
Kivan
Jaheira (Khalid got killed)
Ajantis
Branwen
Xan (good complement magic-wise for my main character)

Since you are a mage, I suspect you don't want her, but you do want to
keep Minsc. Drop Imoen, get Dynaheir. Send Dynaheir back into the pit
and the rest of the party out of reach. Drop Dynaheir from the party,
and make Imoen rejoin. As long as Minsc doesn't see Dynaheir, he won't
leave. Get out, and leave her in the pit. Problem solved.

I think I agree with you...my char is a mage, and I have insisted on keeping
Dynaheir, but in this game (opposite of MM6--the last CRPG I really got
into) it does no particular good to have more than one powerful mage, it
seems.

Just make sure you drop Imoen in an Inn or some such safe place, not out in
the open in a non-town map.

Personnally, I do not agree with that. In my current party, I have 4 mages
(one general and 3 specialists) of level 8-9, and will they all cast
fireball simultaneously, I assure you that the result is impressive!

Of course, since all four of them are dual- or multi-classed, they have the
additional advantage of being able to use swords, cast healing, open
locks..., which reduces their wizard-weakness considerably.

I disagree... I use at least two to three mages.
Imoen dualed Thief/mage
Quayle Cleric/Illusionist

Higher level magic users gain advantages over their corresponding warrior
classes which makes up for their low level weakness.
Only having one mage does not allow for groovy high level spells. If
nothing else you must appreciate dozens of Magic Missiles.

No need. Enemies won't attack unjoined NPCs. And I was just suggesting
that you drop her for one moment, only to let Dynaheir join. That
satisfies Minsc, and you can immediately remove Dynaheir in favor of
Imoen, who is standing to the side. The reason you should drop Imoen
is that she is the NPC most likely to wait around until you ask her to
rejoin. Some others might leave immediately after being dropped.

Strip minsc naked and run him thru the map till he meets nature ..
Both Kivan and Dynaheir beat Min to death..

But if your a mage . might be worth considering losing kivan, i find
he sucks as a week char later in the game ..

With your lead character a mage, you don't really need another. However,
you might
consider dropping Khalid and Jaheira for Minsc and Dynaheir. It's really
about 50/50.
With a little development and armour Kivan is damn good in combat, either
in melee,
or using his fine archery skills. If you give Imoen the bracers of
archery (when they come
along), and steadily increasing short bows, she and Kivan make a damn
fine ranged weapon
and scouting team. Be sure to keep Kivan a set of leather armor (enhanced
when possible),
so he can use his ranger's stealth abilities. And with a second set of
plate or ankheg, he's
good in melee.Jaheira's prime conbtrtibution is her healing abilities,
but with your main char developing and
Branwen, that will be well covered.
