What's the best tactic to eliminate a Gauth? (beholder)
(or two/tree)

if you know where they are, get a guy with a ring of invis and make him set
traps for the beholder (preferably Yoshimo) than summon all the monsters and
animals you can and send em to whoop them up, than get ur guys to come and
help murder them

I summoned a Fire Elemental or three on a group of 4 Gauths, and some
miscellaneous smaller monsters from Monster Summoning II or III to distract
them from the real threat.

Let me guess. You're in the rift area of the Unseeing Eye quest, aren't you?
I had the same problem with the three gauths in that particular area.

After a few attempts, I eventually just left them there and made my way up
to the Adventuring mart in Waukeens Promenade. Provided you have installed
the mercants from the bonus CD's, go to the merchant just at the top of the
stairs and buy the Shield of Balduran. I know its expensive for a party just
starting out, but trust me IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. Those wont be the only
gauths you will face in this quest, and this sheild makes the job so much
easier.

If you don't have the bonus CD's, you can just get the files for the
merchants from the link below (don't worry, it's legal to do this)

Summon a couple of Fire Elemental about 2 or 3 will do the trick nicely.

The easiest way to kill ANY Beholder in the game is to use 1 fighter with a
Cloak of Mirrors. If you are fighting Elder Orbs, use the Chaotic Commands
priest spell too. Try it. You'll like it! Gauths epecially fall like flies
around a guy with this cloak. The only drawback is that some of the
Beholders kill themselves when their Flesh to Stone Spells and Disentegrate
rays bounce back and kill them, and you won't always get the experience
points for their deaths. It is fun as hell anyway. Just keep the rest of
your party far away from the action, or they might get Stoned or Lightninged
by accident. If you don't have this, just surround a conventional Beholder,
hacking away and using Magic Missile, and hope for the best. Spell
Deflection works fine against them, since that is the method the cloak uses,
but the spell as cast won't last long with all those high-level spells being
thrown at it. The cloak establishes it permanently. A Globe of
Invulnerability should keep out most Gauth spells, and Protection from
Energy/Magic Energy should work fine too. Gauths can usually be beaten by 2
or 3 good fighters, especially if you back them up with mage and cleric
offensive spells.

They always come in clumps, so I had Nalia toss off about four fireball spells
in a row at them. This would usually leave just one still standing, with only
a couple of hit points left.
I see other folks have other techniques, so you can pick whichever one you
like best. Or save one for your next go-round.

Lots of good options there....might as well kick my solution in ;<)

I just have my cleric summon up a couple woodlands sprites: they hit the
gauths with with hold spells...about 90% effective

Without any offensive spells or special items (like the cloak or shield),
here's how I did it:

Cast the following on your party: chant, haste, defensive harmony
Cast improved invisiblity on you fighters and stand them right next to the
gauths, while keeping the rest of the party just out of sight.
Get your fighters to start hacking away at them, and a second later, start
the rest of the part doing whatever they do. I downed the three gauths and
the 12 (?) shadows in about 2 seconds flat.

To get rid of 2 beholders and 2 Gauths this is what i did. Had my
Thief hide in the Shadows and moved him in to see how close my 2
casters could stand without being seen by the baddies. They each cast
a Fireball and then as they ran back along the corridor one cast Death
Fog and the other Stinking Cloud (i think). Then i summoned a skeleton
and left it at the edge of these area effect spells so i would know
if/when any of the baddies were headed my way. A few got through but
they were Near Death and i finished them off quickly.

I used wizards eye to scout, then just webbed them and dropped a bunch of
things like stinking cloud and fireball.

The beholders didn't seem to be affected by the web and one of them kept
sneaking up to attack me, but as soon as he got in sight i knocked him back
with ring of the ram and it worked. he got knocked back into the cloud and
died.

A really easy way is to have a mage Get close enough to use area spells(but not
too close! Mages are pathetic when attacked by three gauths heading their way)
and just Cast sphere of chaos. The dumb gauth dont even rush to attack, they
just sit there and take it. Once the spell ends, have your fighters rush in
and finish off the (lucky?) gauth that survived the spell. In my game Minsc
applied a liberal butt-kicking, and killed a gauth in two hits after that.
