Hey. :o)

Ehm... How do I backstab an enemy with Yoshimo? I hide in shadow and then
what? If I simply attack, he leaves the shadows and i don't get my x4
damage. Do I need a special weapon or tactic?

Can someone please explain or tell me, where the manual explain how to do? I
can't find an explenation in the manual...?

Best regards,
Voller.

In general: Have a weapon suitable for backstabbing ready. Hide
_behind_ a monster, as close as possible.

Yeah, as in, 'stab him in the *back*' :-) you can hide anywhere tho,
just need to have your first attack made at the enemies back (doesn't
work on some critters like beholders, air elementals, goloms) uing
'discrete' weapons like swords (short sword/katana/dagger for my
prefence).
If only you could get hide in shadows/move silently kill to say
150-200% and be able to backstab from the front... if only.

To stop your toasting, before you go posting, read this:
http://www.demonspawn.net/bg/usage.htm
- the alt.games.baldurs-gate posting guide - read it, learn it, do it

I don't think you can backstab while hidden in shadows. Every
time I tried it, as soon as I made the move to attack, I left shadows,
and hence wasn't invisible anymore. Your options are:

* invisibility spells (level 2 and 4 mage spells -- there aren't any
other good level 2 mage spells anyway!)
* invisibility potions (you can pick these up from various enemies)
* invisibility rings (at least two in the game (plus the ring of Gaxx))

then just sneak up behind the enemy, plant your blade in their innards
(by way of their back), and whammo: 196 points of damage and a dead enemy.

It makes the sound like you leave the shadows, but you can BS from Hiding in
the Shadows. What would the point be otherwise? It makes another test I
think though, your move silent check. If you make that, you then move in and
make an attack roll. Sometimes you will miss a backstab.

the message text will say you have left shadows but you still have a short
period in order to actually succesfully hit the enemy, if you do your
backstab multiplyer will be applied to the attack roll.

No, you can, but you have to be *very* close to your target before you
strike. The messages are a little confusing as well, because they first
tells "xxx leaves the shadows" and then e.g. "xxx triple damage ..." if
you were successful.

Actually you don't necessary have to be that close to BS, I've done it starting
about 4-6 character "bubbles" away. If you're in shadows and leave shadows you
should notice that it actually takes a few seconds (maybe 3 D&D 'rounds') before
you character becomes non-transparent. You CAN pause while hidden in shadows
and then attack (making sure you're actually behind the enemy) and then when you
hit attack under the pause mode it will say "leaving shadows" but it doesn't
take effect until:

1) You hit the enemy within 3 rounds;
2) You miss the enemy within 3 rounds;
3) You don't do anything within 3 rounds

You should be able to see what I mean if you hide your thief and then come out
of shadows and target him/her with an attack spell. The message should come out
saying that you can not target invisible or sanctuaried characters. It's a pain
sometimes as I have to wait a few secs to cast a heal spell on my thief after
coming out of shadows!
