This is how the technical bard sees it:
He was born to peasant farmers in the lands around what is now Gran
March. During a war, his parents were killed, leaving the young Kyuss
to his own devices. He entered the temple of Nerull at the age of 12 to
take training as a priest, as he wished to know more about the fate of
his parents. He proved a very good student, but it soon appeared that
he was obsessed with halting death. However, the Great Lord Nerull did
not allow a return to life for the dead, only unlife. And as such,
Kyuss became an expert in this. He studied the works of Vecna and
Tilorop, and other great necromancers of the past, and he began to
create ever more horrific creatures.
As his life waned, he searched out the powers of unlife for himself, and
one dark night, as invading armies approached his temple, he transformed
himself into a great lich, and sent his undead hordes against the
invaders.
However, the magic of the pale-skinned invaders was to much, and Kyuss
fled north and east until he came to a place he felt great power. He
hid himself with magic, and set about to create his masterwork, the Sons
of Kyuss. He worked for many years, and eventually manifested the
horrid creatures. However, the invading armies had moved east, and he
thought himself powerful enough, along with his "Sons" to fight them
off. The Sons terrified the oncoming hordes, but one of their magi, one
whose name is forever remembered, Slerotin, feared not, and destroyed
Kyuss with a magical conflagration. Slerotin thought the Sons also
destroyed, but deep within the Worm Crawl Fissure, the Sons survived,
and they began to hunt for victims with which to maintain their
"number".
Kyuss' history is shrouded in time, but the fact that he existed in
undeniable, as the Sons continue to ravage the world like few undead
have.
