I have a problem with sound in Colin McRae Rally and International Rally
Championship:

The game starts fine, but after starting a rally, the sound becomes corrupted
after playing for about 5 seconds.

I'm using a Voodoo card (Diamond Monster 3D) + Soundblaster 16, and I've
tried DirectX 6, DirectX 6.1, latest SB16 drivers, latest Diamond drivers,
latest 3dfx reference drivers.

Tried playing with/without a MS Sidewinder joystick (Sidewinder software
enabled/removed), with a keyboard...

This is driving me bananas! Anyone solve this problem?

System specs:

Windows 95 OSR2, Direct X6.1
Celeron 300A (not overclocked)
Abit BH6 Motherboard
Soundblaster 16 (latest drivers)
Diamond Monster 3d (tried latest diamond + latest 3dfx reference drivers)
Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro

Standard question re CMR have you put in the bug fix???it cures allsorts of weird
effects
dunno tho IRC shouldn't display the same probs suspect a fault in the SB16 try
deleting
from system and allow a hardware detection it usually works for me

The sound runs fine here except for the co-driver vocals (worked originally
but now completely absent). Reinstalling got rid of the problem only to find
the same happened again just a few days later. Anyone any ideas?

Are you running the Demo of TOCA2 by any chance? As that buggers the co-
driver speech up in CMR. I love the demo of TOCA2 but as it wipes the
speech out I've got rid of the demo. Anyone know if this happens with
the full version or is it just a demo thing?

Yes, I do have the patch installed. The whole system is also a fresh install,
but I did try removing the SB16 and have it re-detected as you suggested,
with no joy. I've also tried swapping out the SB16 with a known working one,
but the problem remains. Damn!

Hmmm... I have a similar problem. I have the full version of TOCA2 installed
and working fine, but I get absolutely no sound at all in CMR, which I
installed afterwards! I do get some sound on that little codemasters video at
the start, and in the next sequence with the Subaru in the garage, but in an
actual rally it's completely silent. Codemasters tech support told me to copy
qmixer.dll from the CD but it had no effect. TOCA2 and all other programs have
perfect sound on my PC. Any ideas?

I also find the menu system almost unusable at times: that screen where you
choose between "view stages", "continue" and "reset" - it feels like it's
running at about 1/10 proper speed and I have to hold keys down for ages to
get a response.

Spec: AMD K6-2/400, Win98, Guillemmot maxi gamer 64 sound card, DirectX 6,
128MB RAM, 8MB voodoo2.

TIA
Tarby

Someone said something about taking the Qmixer.dll file from the McRae
CD and copying it over the top of the one that's on the machine after
installing TOCA 2. I can't remember the details as I dumped the demo
before I got the reply. Anyone else?

I posted the mail about fixing the speech problem some time ago. I now have
the full game
(TOCA 2) and don't know if the problem has been fixed, as I still have the
qmixer dll in my CMR directory, and as everything is working, I aint gonna
mess around with it (if it aint broke don't try and fix it!).

With regard to the menu screens in CMR, some developer at Codemasters needs
a serious slap. These are quite possibly the most badly written menu
screens I have ever had the displeasure of using. I have a Matrox
Millennium II AGP 8 Meg. All was working fine until a few months ago I
decided to not follow my own advice, and fix something that wasn't broken by
updating my Matrox drivers. Since then, the menu screens in CMR have run at
a snails pace. Imagine my embarrassment when I subsequently read the readme
file on the CD and found the problem clearly stated! I couldn't reinstall
the old Matrox drivers the old Matrox install program kept crashing, so
I've just lived with it ever since.

Chris.

Any chance of re-posting the fix as I have to keep swapping Qmixer.dll
files each time I change from TOCA 2 (Demo) to CMR. Toca doesn't
recognise the CMR file and therefore refuses to run. Meanwhile the Toca
file blanks the speech in CMR.

Success at last! One of the following - don't know which - fixed the sound
problem on my PC:

1. Uninstalled TOCA2
2. Got latest sound card drivers
3. Installed CMR patch

The keyboard lag is now much better too. Funnily, although it's still a bind
in a novice championship, it's hardly a problem at all in intermediate.
Weird...

I could have choked on a toasted muffin- I emailed Codemasters a while back on
just this problem I found it in the demo, it doesn't happen in the full version.
the cure I devised is simple move dmixer.dll from your /windows/system directory
into the toca2/games directory then copy the CMR qmixer.dll to windows/system
this will renable the sound on CMR while allowing TOCA2 to work there are two
points to watch- when you uninstall toca2 it will delete qmixer.dll in the sytem
directory so you must recopy it from the cd - the uninstall may fail to clean the
toca2 directories because of the extra file this may be a problem if you get the
full version And thanks for the info on the menus mine are just the same pain in
the arse slow !!
Regards Derek p.s. try the cheat (?)" hangover" for blurred vision over bumps and
corners it really makes me nausious
