I believe that you can connect in read-only mode. Newsgroups are not
being updated and there is no posting capability....AFAIK
Such has been the case since 10 something on the morning of Feb 2.

Readfreenews has been read-only for quite a long time; the clue is in the
name ;)) (There was an option to sign up for posting privileges at one
time but the operator withdrew that in the face of too much abuse. I
don't know if any of the posting accounts are still in use).
As for maintenance jobs such as adding new groups, a free service will
have to rely on the operator finding time and energy to attend to such
things after the paying jobs are taken care of.

Of course, which is why I was using it for posting ever since
individual.net went pay only. I last posted from RFN on the morning of
Feb. 2, 2008.

The end of your path:
indigo.octanews.net!authen.yellow.readfreenews.net.POSTED!not-for-mail
Yellow.readfreenews.net is refusing my connect attempts.
I signed up for posting several years ago and have used it daily for
years. When did you sign up?
What do you mean by "one to read, one to post"?

I have had the same feeling. But note that the originating serve for
"kybear"s messages were yellow.readfreenews.net which is the server
which suddenly started refusing to allow me to sign in. Usually the
message is "access denied' and occasionally i get "server busy" -- but
those are winsock messages and pretty meaningless.
You can remove your userid/password and sign into it as read-only -- at
least i did that a week or so ago.
But I really wish that I knew what was going on there..............

Yes, but still nothing later than Feb. 2.

Ok. Thanks. From what you say, I will understand that he has the
internals running but has no external "get" updates going on -- BTW,
"get"ting the propagated newsgroup load is what i meant by "updating".
Anyway, i can't login to Yellow.RFN, where i did for the longest......
I can only assume that it will be back at some time, because from what
you report it has not been shut down.......

It sounds like the article numbering may have gotten reset on the news
server. This happens every so often. Try either sampling the last X
days (the best choice) or tell your software to download all available
articles again. The goal here is to (a) get the articles you have
missed so far, and (b) reset your news reader software so it is in
synch again with the news server for article numbers.
Hope this helps.

Don't know if it matters, but I just did a retrieval of all headers from
allnews.readfreenews.net in a group and got nothing after feb. 2nd and
it couldn't retrieve the last article. I just got timeouts and retries.

Ah yes, the old "last post' syndrome, caught in cyberspace half-in and
half-out of the array docking bay -- sigh.....forever in transit, yet
frozen in time..........

Cute, I like it. Actually, I was refering to not getting any response
on last, second last etc. However *now* I'm getting 400's on article
retrieval, so maybe it was a load matter.

As this posts attribution line indicates. No such luck for me though.
How did you manage?
