I was quite happy using google groups to read and post messages, but
since I visited the 24hoursupport group, I have discovered that I
should consider using another way to access the groups. (I was called
a 'Google Groper', amongst other not very complimentary things)
Can anyone help with this?
Cheers - Den.
Sure, Dan.
You need two things:
1) a news reader - Outlook Express is the best newsreader even written.
It puts every single dedicated or aftermarket news reader to shame.
2) a news server - freeteranews is the best free newserver ever offered.
It never fails to deliver. It has 100 percent retention. It has every
single newsgroup and every single binary. It never goes down. It is
reliable 24/7/365 for posting. It rocks!

AOL and a lot of other providers don't provide access to a newsserver as
part of their 'connectivity' package.

There are a lot of disadvantages to using googlegroups GG to read and
post to usenet groups. There's the problem with the clunky interface,
there's the problem with GG inability to filter some newsposts, there's
the disadvantage of having to post a good address in the From, there's
the disadvantage of having your connectivity IP stamped on your
messages.
The problem of being a 'googlegrouper' and getting filtered out^3 by
those who use newsreaders and newsservers to read and post to usenet is
another problem. That problem is caused by a combination of there being
a lot of GGers who are newbie-ish and uninformed about a lot of things,
including customary usenet netiquette, and some other GGers being spam
and nonsense generators, and some other GGers being more experienced but
abusing some anonymity potential of being a googlegrouper who accesses
by proxy.

It looks like you are accessing with the AOL IE6 which has a type of
newsreader built in, Outlook Express. If you have experience with using
OE, then I'm of the opinion that you can use that experience to help you
accessing a newsserver because your OE past experience is useful.
Whether or not you want to stay with OE as your newsreader will be up to
you as you gain experience with accessing newsgroups via that
newsreader. If you do not have any experience with OE or any other
newsagent which you might have used as a mailuser agent, then you will
be using any choice of newsreader from the position of inexperience.
There are newsgroups such as news.software.readers where newsreader
features and problems are discussed.
The other side of the problem is to develop experience with accessing a
newsserver. One free newsserver is news.aioe.org. There are others
which you can learn about in this group as well as by accessing
Sebastien Willemijn's site^1 and the index site^2.

This is the same poster under the moniker "Den" that started the same
discussion a day ago under the Subject of "AOL and newsreaders" in the
24hoursupport.helpdesk newsgroup.
The majority of that 24hshd thread wasn't actually very helpful -- but
then I'm not sure what is holding Den back from helping hirself.

I tried OE and hated it!
Among other things, I could never find a way to delete individual
messages and keep those I wanted. The only option I could find deleted
ALL messages after xx days.
Has this changed since I looked at it long ago?
I found Free Agent much better but I don't think it is available any
more? Just the "pay for" version?

Yes, it's easy to delete individual messages. Just right click on the
menu bar and select 'customize' then locate the red X on the right and
move it over to the left then close the dialog box. Now you have a big
red X on the menu bar. Select the post or posts you want to delete by
highlighting it then click the red X and it's gone for good.

Well, having AOL, he/she probably has no way of knowing from the real
internet.

And you really think the replies here have been more helpful? (rolls
eyes)
So far, replies in 24hour have been more helpful as some have actually
provided suggestions on free newsservers (or very cheap ones). In
contrast, this thread has provided no useful suggestions to the OP
that helps him get off Google Groups.
Announcing a personal bias against Google Groupers or rehashing why
using Google Groups is bad is irrelevant. The OP already indicated
that he doesn't want to use GG. That point was so difficult to figure
out from his post? I figured why start another thread here when one
was already established in 24hour and actually had some help for the
OP but which might benefit from even more help. The idea was to let
others know in case they actually wanted to provide something more
useful to the existing thread. Guess not.
He's so helpful, isn't he?

Too lazy to do a Google Groups on my moniker to find out for yourself,
I see.
Not lazy - I just don't care.

A human being is a part of a whole, called by us "universe", a part
