Eternal-September went to its heavenly reward.

Not from my location. Trying to telnet in gets the following:
>telnet news.eternal-september.org 119
Connecting To news.eternal-september.org...
(a long pause)
Could not open connection to the host, on port 119: Connect failed
It isn't a pathing (route) problem because telnet did reach the host but
nothing is listening on port 119. Actually maybe something is listening
because no bind on that port would've resulted in an immediate reject.
So it looks like I have an okay route (i.e., their host is reachable),
their host is up (it tries to establish a connection), but the server
program isn't responding.
Can't even get connected to http://www.eternal-september.org/. Uffda,
it's all down.
Oops, forget about their web server being down. I used
eternal-september.org but their nameserver doesn't default to the "www"
host if one is not specified. Have to use www.eternal-september.org.
Still can't telnet into their NNTP server, though.
Gave up waiting after clicking the "Eternal September INN Status" link
(goes to http://188.40.43.213/stats/inn_status.html).
They have a pack of affirmative action types working for them.

Actually, the long pause indicates a connection timeout between you
and the server. If it had just been the newsserver, you would have
received a "Connection refused" without the delay you observed.
In fact, I saw lots of routing errors in the server log this
morning, but I don't know the reason yet.

You must have been trying while I was running the recovery system.
Normally, there is no ssh running on port 22 and, of course, your
news account does not allow you to login via ssh, it's not even
a system account, just a username and password known to the newsserver.

Every cloud has a silver goddamn lining.
Robb promised to mail me a PCI WiFi card,
he charged my Visa debit card, pretened he mailed it ( he didn't )
and then refunded me the charge.
Why ? so he could look at my credit report ? I wonder.
This is the same dude who won't let me post because I use:
Content-Type: Text/HTML; charset=UTF-8
As if the entire World Wide Web were a “security risk”.
What a fuckin' moron ( like you, Junior ).
Why do binary servers even exist ? it makes no sense.
Hey, when you gonna get your news client updated so it can reply
like all the others do? Did you like give up? Don't be like Homer
Simpson and give up. Hang in there Baby Relf!!!
Then it's in another dimension; if it has no width than it does not
exist in our spacetime continuum. WTF are you into now, Baby Relf?
No big deal, just odd.
OK, didn't know what you were talking about. It must be something
that slrn does. All I did was hit followup and didn't edit the
subject. Could be something I can fix in the config settings.
Your “Subject:” line is shown here:
http://Google.COM/group/alt.free.newsservers/msg/2fcb5466c0e936f5?dmode=source
slrn doesn't think U-FeFF is white·space;
so, when it strips leading white·space, it leaves it in.
( <Windows.H>'s GetStringTypeW() tells me what's white·space or not )
In UTF-8, U-FeFF is known as the “UTF-8 signature”,
it should be stripped out ( as Google Groups does ).
There's nothing you can do to change slrn's behavior;
John E. Davis might want to look into it.
> In fact, I saw lots of routing errors in the server log this

i had the same problem with inn 2.4 and i don't know why sometimes it
happens
it may be an hw fault or some ovdb issue

In the case of Eternal-September it's not just the newsserver, that's
getting problems, the entire machine seems to drop dead and it needs a

As OVDB was a constant cause of trouble, I finally got rid of it when I
replaced Motzarella with Eternal-September and this has dramatically
decreased the number of problems over the last 4 months.

Probably just personal choices of cool or cutsy memorabilia from Ray's
past in picking names for things now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_september
My guess is he migrated to another server (on the same or different
host) so he needed a different name for it. Eternal-September is a bit
long, though, with the nuisance or oddity of a non-alphanumeric
character in it. Also notice the following header used by Ray's server
(if you don't add your own):
Organization: A noiseless patient spider
Then read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Noiseless_Patient_Spider
Why'd you pick badgolferman for your moniker? Twas some trivia from
your life experience. Mine was carried forward from my days of
participating in the old Thief gaming forums (and chosen for use here
after I decided to abandon using my real name which wasn't unique enough
in Usenet to be searchable). Ray used a name for his server from
something that previously piqued his interest plus he had to use
something that was still available for domain registration. With over
100 million domains (http://www.domaintools.com/internet-statistics/),
it's getting more difficult to come up with words for a new domain that
you would like to use rather than get stuck with.
>Why'd you pick badgolferman for your moniker?
Because I used to take myself too seriously on the golf course and
would become highly irritated when hitting bad shots although I was
never that good of a golfer. One day a man I respected told me "I'm
not going to play golf with you anymore if you keep acting like a
baby." From that point on I accepted being a bad golfer. The irony is
I became better than average eventually and am just grateful whenever I
do get out on the course which is seldom these days.

stats, number of users, traffic, etc?

There's been one of those posters in alt.comp.freeware. Although I
don't think they got anywhere as high as 20 different names. 20 is
something else.
In a.c.f. it seems a group of jokers was probably taking turns to post
under those various IDs. One was the guy's wife although she didn't
ever post in her own name.
Was it one of your users? It would have been a real sight to see the
same user ID arguing with itself under 20 names.
Taking a page from Jeff's book, Ray should have picked EternalSeptember
instead of Eternal-September. I really must thank Jeff for introducing
us to that "middle-dot" character because the gals just won't leave me
alone since I started using it. Thanks, Jeff!

"481 Invalid Credentials" is LDAP speak for "Either your username or
your password is wrong", so this is a client issue in most cases.

Seeing "psychos" everywhere, Pants? I'm not surprised, with the
degree of mental retardation common to the Grik branch of the Arab
race! LOL
Note, we've been talking about replies to this post:
“ Re: U-FeFF, un·like US ASCII 32, has no width. ”
news:_@Jeff_Relf.Seattle.2009_Nov16.9.24pm.oh
In Windows Live Mail, when you reply to it,
the title becomes, “ Re: U-FeFF, un·like US ASCII 32, has no width. ”
( not “ Re: Re: U-FeFF [...] ” ).
You told me:
“ The entry for U+FEFF is:
FEFF;ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE;Cf;0;BN;;;;;N;BYTE ORDER MARK;;;;
The relevant field value here is the third one, "Cf", which means that
the character is a "format control character". ”.
Right, it's not printable ( i.e. not “black·space”, so to speak ).
User·Data ( i.e. the title ) starts after the "Subject: ";
so that's where I put the “UTF·signature”
( to indicate that it's UTF·8, not ASCII, not Windows·1252 ).
Are you now actually claiming you are NOT a "psycho", poor housebound
Yitzhak McSchwein? Must be the joke of the year! Hahahahahaaaaa!!
