Is anyone else free for general purpose nntp server text ng posting
other than these half dozen well known publicly open news servers?

I'm not sure what command to use to test reading rather than posting though.

On any telnet conection, "help" gives you a list of available commands.
I usually try something like:
"group alt.free.newsservers"

"xover 1-"
"article" (last article nuber listed)

This server replies "480 Authentication required..."

But this nntp telnet test may be to the wrong port for all I know.

Is there a way to sniff which is the right nntp port on any given server?
