The freedyn.de project was dissolved on December 8th, 2023!

Dear users,

the FreeDYN.de project has had to deal with a high number of “black
sheep” among users for a long time.

As a result, over time new blocks were added to the registration of user
accounts, so that certain IP networks could no longer access the service
and its functions.

This was already a good start to limiting abuse of the service.
However, given the large number of users, there were too many abuse
reports per week that I had to process!

As a result, after exactly 10 years, I decided to take the service
completely offline.

Attacks on FreeDYN.de's systems have been steadily increasing for two
years. (Since use was only possible for users from the EU.)

Unfortunately, this meant that a large number of functions were
restricted or not even activated at all.

The topic of data protection has priority 1 and I have always tried to
protect user data.

However, you also have to store certain data in order to be able to
legally protect yourself as the operator of a service.

This data was completely deleted after the service was switched off and
can no longer be reconstructed.

Users who have hosted their own domain via meinkc DNS can manage it as
usual with new access data in a separate portal.

I would like to thank all users for trusting my service!

news server admins in other newsgroups (e.g., news.admin.net-abuse.usenet
news.admin.peering, news.software.nntp, alt.free.newsservers, alt.privacy.
anon-server) have discussed many topics related to usenet servers, mostly
too technical for the layman and retired hobbyist (little old me included)
to be concerned with, but also talking about whether the googlegroups.com
usenet archive could be made available on account of its historical value,
or even rebuilt from scratch such as dejanews had started off the project?
thus a read-only (no posting), fully-searchable, web-based usenet archive
might be feasible, but even if it were would it be worth that much effort?
it's a complex issue, but the availability of free newsservers that allow
posting are what made usenet popular to begin with, and with googlegroups
being shuttered more users will be looking for servers that allow posting
