Hi ! I'm a real beginner with Painter and I have to make an oil painting
with a photo. Have you any tips, tutorials or links that could help ? If
possible I'd like to make something looking like a Renoir.

Thanks,

Gerald.

Clone the image and point over it using 'clone source' as the colour.
Beware of short dabs as they tend to introduce odd colour into the
image.

Gerald,

If you want to use the photo as reference only, then paint from scratch,
you can either open both the photo and your new Canvas at the same time,
or open the photo and paint on a Layer (or multiple Layers) above it.

Another method is to do Clone painting: You make a Clone (exact copy) of
the photo, delete the image, turn on Tracing Paper to see a 50% opacity
view of the original photo, and use any of the the Cloners Category's
Variants to paint, or use other Brush Variants with the Clone Colors box
checked in the Art Materials palette's Colors section. There are some
Cloners variants that already look like Oils and other, non-cloning
brush variants that either already look like oils or can be made to look
more like oils by varying their settings.

Using the second method, you can create an entirely new look based on
the photo. You can also use Cloning brushes to paint in the basic image
then add specific detail using non-cloning brushes to enhance the
painting.

Depending on the Painter version you're using, you'll find Clone
painting tutorials and other information on Cloning and Line Art that
come with the software in the following locations:

PAINTER 7
Installed with Painter 7 - Painter 7 > Tutorials >

ClonePainting.PDF (written by Cris Palomino who works for Disney and
also co-moderates the Painter Forum at In Depth Discussions along with
Paulo Roberto Purim and me).

LineArt.PDF (written by Karen Sperling of Artistry Online).

BrushVariants.PDF (check page 3 for the Cloners Category Variants demo
images).

PAINTER 6
In the Painter 6 User Guide (or on the Painter 6 Application CD -
Painter 6 > Documentation > Painter6.pdf), Chapter 6, Cloning and
Tracing.

Also on the Painter 6 Application CD - Painter 6 > Documentation >
Painter6Brushes.pdf, the section named Cloners gives you a demo of each
of the Cloners Category's Variants, including the Oil Brush Cloner.

In the Painter Forum at In Depth Discussions, we do a lot of brush
testing, custom brush sharing, and demos of our brushes. Chris ("Frodo")
recently shared a large set of custom brushes he created called Fine Art
brushes. They simulate both oils and acrylics and are extraordinarily
nice brushes. If you're using Painter 7, you can download them. The URL
to In Depth Discussions is below my signature.

You'll also find some good tutorials on Karen Sperling's Artistry Online
CDs at:

Hope to see you visiting us in the Painter Forum at In Depth
Discussions. It's a wonderful community of artists and full of
resources, answers, and general support that will help you learn Painter
while having a lot of fun. Possibly one of the artists there can give
you some "live" tips for doing your "Renoir" photo painting. :o)
