1) Various crashes on Windows 95/98 machines that have video/tablet/
printer drivers that are buggy and alter the FPU control register.
2) Hangs and crashes on Windows 95/98 machines with certain tablet
drivers that do not use the latest WINTAB.
3) Crash in the Dynamic Text Dynamic Layer if the system contains a font
whose name exceeds 31 characters.
4) Crash when moving the JPEG Quality slider in the Image Slicer Dynamic
Layer.
5) Painter fails to launch if physical or virtual memory [swap file
size] exceeds 2 GB.
6) Painter fails to launch on Windows 95 systems that are lacking
Shlwapi.dll.
7) KPT 3 filters don't load. Also other improvements to the Photoshop
filter host are present in build 33.
8) Cloning to a layer is offset versus cloning to the canvas.
Although more time will be required to completely test this version, we
want to offer any Painter 6 Windows users the chance to run the current
build 33 if version 6.0.0 bugs are interfering with their productivity.
The updater is called PATCHB33.EXE and is 691K. To download it, use
ftp://bullwinkle:fat...@scarab.metacreations.com/painter6/patchb33.exe
First reboot Windows, then reinstall Painter 6.0.0 from CDROM and
finally run PATCHB33.EXE. If you changed Painter's directory from the
default, you will have to locate Painter6.exe manually inside
PATCHB33.EXE.
If you decide to try build 33, please email back to this address
mailto:squi...@metacreations.com what your results are, especially if
you are still experiencing serious problems.
Although Wacom drivers before 4.40 will work much better with build 33,
we strongly recommend upgrading to version 4.40 from ftp://
ftp.wacom.com/pub/drivers/IBMPC/intuos/440/PC440_en.EXE
If the experience of Painter list and alt.fractal-design.painter users
is good, we will post this patch publicly on our Web site.

Before you buy.

Thank you very much for this. Although I'm on NT and have current
Wacom drivers, and probably wouldn't have seen many of these problems,
I was very hesitant to consider upgrading. This increases my confidence
in the Windows version of the product, although I too will be
interested to hear people's experience.

"Art destroys silence." --Dmitri Shostakovich
I'm on Win98SE, Pentium3-500 with 256MB RAM and a 20.4GB hard drive with
lots of free space. My tablet is a Wacom artPad II with 4.40 version
drivers.
Plugin filters now crash that didn't before and I still can not use a single
watercolor brush without crashing at first click on the canvas after
selecting a watercolor brush. It's a Kernel32.dll error I get repeatedly.
The first patch did stop the paper.pap corruptions I kept getting and I went
back to it although there's the known problem with kpt3 plugins not loading
and my watercolor brushes still crash, but it's better than having multiple
plugins crash. Painter 6 was pretty stable in that patch unless I dared to
try a watercolor brush. I had one other crash after playing with a lot of
different tools and I don't know what triggered it.
It's so odd because another person has her Dynamic Text not working,
crashing upon apply, but her watercolor brushes do work fine. I have no
problems with Dynamic Text crashes (never did before any patches) and my
watercolor brushes are absolutely unusable.
One things I have found to be consistent, after every crash, I must restart
the app twice, the first restart nothing will show on the canvas at all,
with any normally working painting tool. The second restart fixes this.
This will not be a factor when it stops crashing. ;-)

My system changed, I removed the serial tablet and drivers today and
installed a USB Wacom Intuos tablet and the new drivers. I removed Painter
6, reinstalled it then patched with this latest patch.
Water color brushes still crash every time I attempt to use them in Painter
6 with kernel32.dll errors.
Plugin filters work for the most part, but there is a problem with using
plugins on selected objects on layers. There also appears to be some
differences in how a plugin is applied to objects on layers between Painter
6 and other graphics apps like Paint Shop Pro and Photo-Paint. Where a
plugin might apply to the entire layer (with no selections made) in PSP, in
Painter6 it does not apply anything outside the object on the layer, even if
the effect was to warp the object and add it to some background. See my
thread on selections in this group for demo image urls and more info about
the selections problem I have.
I've still got my finger crossed that someone will figure out what my
problem with the water color brushes is.
Because selections I made in b31 and b33 were not recognized at all by
plugins and now they're recognized but offset, I know they're closing in on
that problem but it isn't quite fixed yet.
I'm still betting on a eventual fix of some sort.
