Hello all: I'm using P7, and I've looked in the help files, but I cannot
understand how to collapse a group. It says select the group, and choose
collapse, but no matter what I do, I can't get the 'collapse' item in the
dropdown menu to be active. Help? Thanks in advance, Wendy B :)

Make sure all your layers are set as "Default" If you have any other
settings engaged in any layer, the won't collapse.

Thanks, Tom. That's too bad that you can't use layer modes (a la Photoshop)
to acheive an effect, and collapse them into one and then paint on them. I
wonder if this is possible in ver8. Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

While Painter Layers set to Composite Methods other than Default can be
grouped but not collapsed in two steps (Group-Collapse), there are
several ways around this so it is definitely possible to end up with a
single image Layer and then paint on it or do whatever you want with it.

Depending on the situation, one or another of the options would do the
trick.

One option that's quick is File > Clone. That gets you an exact copy of
whatever was visible (and including the Canvas) when the File > Clone
command was used.

For Water Color Layers, or any other group of Layers all of which are
set to Composite Method Gel, there's a short list of steps to collapse
them into a single Layer.

Hi,

Nope, I don't think the steps have been added at PixelAlley, but they
have been posted numerous times on most of the Painter related
newsgroups, lists, and forums. Here they are again:
______________________________________________________________________

Currently, Water Color Layers and other Layers set to Composite Method
Gel can't be collapsed (the Collapse option is greyed out).

The Collapse option is greyed out for Water Color Layers because there
was an issue with it in the initial Painter 7 release causing corruption
and other unwanted results. This issue will be reopened for Painter 8.

In the meantime, here's the workaround:

1. Select the Water Color Layers and Group them.

2. Expand the Group (click the small triangle to the left of the Group
name).

3. Highlight one of the Water Color Layers and, from the Layers section
menu, choose Convert to Default Layer.

4. Repeat Step 3 for the remaining Water Color Layers.

5. Notice that these Default Layers are still in Composite Method Gel
and the Collapse option is still greyed out.

6. Change the Composite Method from Gel to Default for each of the
Default Layers in the Group.

7. Click the small triangle to the left of the Group name to close the
Group.

8. With the Group highlighted in the Layers list, from the Layers
section menu, choose Collapse.

9. You may want to return the single Layer to Composite Method Gel
to get the original Water Color Layer effect.

This method, adapted for generic use, is from Corel Painter Program
Manager Tanya Staples. Step 9 is added by me.
