Blah blah blah. In other words, Corel nuked procreate. But they
didn't get rid of Painter, Kai's Power Tools or KnockOut. In fact,
Painter 8 has just been released.

Please don't blame the Mac community for procreate's pisspoor
Painter 7 website, which will soon be gone forever, thank heavens.
<http://www.procreate.com/product/painter7/>
Littered with pretentious interactive Flash animation and difficult
to navigate, it set the standard for what NOT to do in web design.
Fractal Designs and Metacreations nurtured community and
participation, and offered useful info and tutorials. Hopefully,
Corel will start doing the same soon. No one in the Painter
community will miss procreate.

This isn't exactly new news... Painter 7 was under the Corel banner too,
wasn't it? I think Corel bought Painter when ProCreate (KPT) went backrupts
about 2 years ago.

Corel bought Painter and a few other programs from Metacreations when
Metacreations decided to drop everything but their 3d plugin for the
web. Procreate was a spinoff of Corel that they put their artist type
programs under.

SpaceGirl,

Corel didn't buy Painter because its owner went bankrupt. Metacreations
owned Painter, KPT, and Bryce (Poser, and others as I recall) and in
December 1999 announced they were selling their graphics software and
planning to follow another path. In Spring 2000 Corel bought Painter,
KPT, and Bryce.

Painter was in the 6.x stage when Corel acquired it from Metacreations. They
released a Painter 6 patch (6.1?) that changed the splash screen to say
"Corel". After an interminably long wait, Corel finally brought out Painter
7, using it to launch their "Procreate" brand.

Painter 8 is now due "soon", (SCHEDULED to ship at the end of April), under
the Corel brand. I'm sure nobody will miss either the Procreate name ("go
forth and procreate?") or the horrible web site.

Anyone heard of what happened to Metacreations? Did they quietly go
under or are they still around?
