To get the best quality out of a computer print some of the best work I've
seen has been printed out of an IRIS printer onto museum quality archival
papers (about 15-200$ per sheet depending on what kind of paper you want to
use)
Anyone who saw the fine art exhibit at Siggraph in '97 knows what I'm
talking about.
As far as a cost effective way to do it, you can go to kinkos, have a heat
transfer color copy made from a computer print out then iron it onto the
canvas, however this is not archival quality and will begin to fade color
after about 2 years, paint on top of it will also probably flake off if that
is your intent.
The best way to make an oil painting is to "make an oil painting" just my
two cents
