Im learning the watercolor brushes in P7 but cant get a good realistic edge
pooling effect, like a very wt brush on dry paper
with hard edges but slightly darker edges. Can any one help me get this? I
love the new diffusion etc tools!
TIA

Kyle....the Pick-up control seems to control all of this. But it only
seems to create the pooling dark edge when painting over another
color. It doesn't seem to work straight on the background.

I tried wetting the whole layer....and I tried painting with a white
"color" or just off white.......and then brushing in color with
"pickup" turned up a notch. No go......no pooling edge unless I paint
color on color.

Maybe someone else has some input.

Kyle,

Edge Pooling Effect:

Painter 7 Water Color variants don't do that edge pooling thing like the
earlier version Water Color brushes did. The best I know to suggest is:

Use Painter 6 or an earlier version if you have it.

OR....

In Painter 7: Paint inside a Selection. To build up pooling along edges,
you may need to paint over the same area more than once, using a fairly
large brush size to avoid buildup where the brush strokes overlap. This
is cumbersome if you want to paint freely, but it does create a nice
pooling effect and could be used in specific areas. Take a look at this
page:

http://www.pixelalley.com/Painter7/painter7-water-color-brushes.html

The top demo image for my "WCDryCamel-antique-pool" variant was done
using the "paint inside selection" method. That's how the edges of the
leaves came to be so rounded, like piping along the edges of upholstery.
I brushed over the leaf selections a few times to let the edge pooling
build up that much. On the flower petals and stem, I didn't lay down so
many brush strokes and the effect is much milder.

Simple Water Variant:

For something more close to earlier versions' Simple Water variant, try
Terrie's set of custom Water Color variants. There's a demo image you
can look at to see how they work and the .XML brush files are available
to download at (scroll to the bottom of the page to find Terrie's
brushes named "tlb-sw647").

Matt's Old Watercolor variant is also a good Painter 7 substitue for
earlier versions' Simple Water variant.

Please let us know if you find better ways to get edge pooling using
Painter 7 Water Color variants as a lot of us will be delighted to hear
about them.

Good luck, :o)
