Well, up here in Mass.- the battle rages on over biomass- the opposition won
the battle so far- the state hired the Manomet Institute which came out with
a report inventing their carbon debt theory and with that- they killed off
biomass for electricity, which would have been a huge market for low value
wood, but very nice given the Depression the wood business is in - since
there is so much low value wood around.
I had been skeptical of biomass- I was the only forester in Mass. that was
skeptical but after seeing several biomass harvests on properties managed by
forester Mike Leonard- then carefully reading reports by people who don't
believe in the carbon debt theory- I tried my first biomass harvest about
which I did a video:

I had never had a feller-buncher on a harvest before, as I had worked only
in Berkshire County most of my career- but I moved to Franklin County 5
years ago where the only biomass market exists in the state due to Pine Tree
Power, a 17 MW power plant and a few other biomass plants just to the north
in NH. I was amazed to see the feller-buncher gently take down big weeviled
white pines one head at a time, rather than just dropping the entire tree
and making a mess- which a guy with a skidder and a chainsaw would have
done- or NOT because few loggers ever bother cutting such trees.
I also liked the fact that the operator was happy to take anything I marked
regardless of size or species- even half rotten trees.
So, now I'm strongly in favor of biomass- though I want it to be highly
efficient and only using wood from well managed forests.
