I'm looking for some suggestions on getting some low end oomph for my
trusty 4.1L carby XF Falcon. The engine is pretty much stock. All I
added were extractors coupled with a 2.25 inch exhaust, and changed
the diff ratio from 2.77 to 3.23 which gave the car more torque and
grunt. The only problem left is my four speed gearbox, and oh do I
miss my freeways!

Would it be worth my while changing the internals? better heads,
regraphing the dizzy, etc .. I know the gains wouldnt be
considerable for such a docile engine...

Otherwise what is the best deal around Melbourne to plonk an ESP V8
into the car? I'm considering all options.

Thanx anyone

The biggest improvement would be to install a performance camshaft and some
beefier valve springs. This would give a huge improvement in top end
performance (and allow the engine to actually rev). I know you were looking
for a bit more low end urge but i can't see the point unless you're towing a
boat :). No point regraphing the dizzy unless u do actually change the cam
(unless ur running lpg in which case have it setup for a gas advance)

Big job putting an 8 in an XF.
My father-in-law had it done to his ute.
Lots of problems.

If you want an 8, buy an XE V8.
Both the XEs and Xfs are getting old and are not worth a lot.

By the way, there is nothing special about an ESP V8.
They are standard.

If you wan't more go and are considreing a V8, junk the 4.1 and get a
4.0 out of say a wrecked EB/D/F, you should be able to pick one up for
around $1600 + another $5-600 for the bits. That would give you
157kw's which is up with the last of the 351's and the XF being a
lighter car than an E series, should see you hosing off many a V8
Commodore ;-) not to mention slightly better fuel economy than your
4.1!!

Just out of curiosity, what sort of power did the older V8's used to make as
standard (in Kw if possible)

IIRC the 351's from XC onwards was 163KWs net (older figures where
gross), which is directly comparable to the current Falcon figures -
157kw's for the standard 4.0 since EF.

Hello everyone.......

Well.. I do have a Turbocharged Motor 4.1 alloy head. I bought it years ago
and had it in a Rambler Javelin. Yep!, I spent a #$#$ load of money on the
previous 401ci motor that was in the Javelin.
I sold the car because I needed have a baby capsule in the back seat. Being
a 2 door it gave me the shits yanking that capsule in and out.
Anyhow the Turbo Kit was bought from Mike Vine in Queensland but I changed
the Exhaust housing to twin pulse. It is water cooled as well.
The Motor was soly built by Alan Nylander in Perth . Its got forged pistons,
O ringed block etc.
The head was ported and polished by John Nastus Engineering and the turbo
was Remanufactured after I pulled the motor out of that Javelin because the
turbo started to sound a bit loud, so better to be safe I always say.
Anyhow Just the motor and kit cost me over $6000 . I now own a TE cortina
that I've spent money on the H/Duty suspension to install the turbo motor
into. Bit of a rust bucket but I do have all the cutting and welding gear
that I have been using on it. The Cortina has a worked 250 and she go's
quite well.
I do have a couple of V8 Chev cars so I guess for a backyarder I'm up to my
eyeballs in projects.
Any how the Javelin weighed about 1500kg and because I still have contact
with the Rambler guy in Perth, Ben Ludlow Motors. I've left the motor with
him to look after till my new shed is ready .
I got Ben to tune one of my Chevy cars with 383 stroker motor, that I have
spent a lot of money on.
He commented that Its an OK motor but it still not as good as his friends
401 V8 Hornet, Blaa , Blaa blaa.
Then Ben said, "You know I remember when you bought in your Javelin years
ago with that Ford Turbo motor in it . It went like a shower of ##$#."
It left me wondering what the hell !!. I can't win.
So if anyone's intersted in making me an offer on the engine please let me
know.

I am with the other guy either go for a 4.0 efi motor out of a current
style falcon or you could spend the same sort of money and TURBO your
engine but depends what condition your engine is in.

Those turbo 4.1 where all the rage a few years ago and they really went
HARD infact you should have no problem blowing away HSV/WRX/Tickford at
least in a straight line!!
