Zinfandel (red!) and preferably one from a producer that starts with the
letter "R" (e.g., Ridge, Ravenswood, Renwood, Rabbit Ridge, Rosemblum,
etc.)

I've always been happy with a Shiraz at a BBQ.

for nice, tasty, and not too expensive alternatives you might try:

Salice Salentino Rosso Riserva.
For a fish BBQ - a Montagny 1er cru or a New Zealand Chard
if you like to be "not so run of the mill" try a south african Rose
Pinotage (if you can get hold of one...)
good luck and good hunting

This may sound like sacrilege, but...

While visiting the Santa Ynez valley last year, I
stopped in this little gourmet market they have. I
was very surprised to find Caymus 94 Cabernet
for $36 a bottle; this was after the WS writeup. I had
some at home, so I thought it would be a good chance
to try a bottle. I bought the Caymus, along with
our picnic supplies which included bbq's ribs from
the market. The Caymus and the ribs were heavenly
together, although it kind of clashed with the
balsamic chicken salad we got.

Does chicken salad go with any kind of alcohol?

depending on the type of chicken salad, with the "waldorff" type (fruit,
celery etc) , try a DRY gewurztraminer, with a lighter type with no fruit
(except maybe apple) no chilli and no tomato try a LIGHTLY wooded chard...
with tomato's - forget it and go for the lager beer... with garlic go for a
heavier chard.
It all depends on what your ingredients and spices are.

What about a chicken salad with a balsamic
vinegar dressing, grapes, and pecans?

A good dry rose. Great when the weather is warm.

Donny Boone and I believe Toad Hollow have such offerings.

Julie:
Blondes(bottle or au natural) are the day dream of all middle-aged men.
It has a lot to do with the post pubescent "glint" factor first elucidated
on by Haim Gougnecht is his pre Jungian analysis of the libido of suppressed
Victorian males-- or in the immortal words of St Chico of Marx--"Why a
duck?"

What about a Brunette? Does it really matter anyway?

Since most men in this group seem to feel most women prefer white wine,
I am mildly curious to see if most men also prefer blondes - not that it
matters, of course.

Julie, It doesn't matter what color, just the character and the shape of the
bottle. (As for blondes, Bright and Beautiful, For brunettes, Deep and
Passionate and reds, always alluring but watchout, the might turn around a
bite you in the ass!)
