Some friends and I recently tried sea urchin. We were amazed at the flavor -
though it caused a gag reflex in all three of us, I and one other were
compelled to try another bite. It still caused that sensation of repulsion,
unlike any other sushi I've tried. In people's experience, is that normal?
Is it an acquired taste, or is it more like something you either love or
hate?

Must have been something wrong with it. No reason for normal uni to
cause a 'gag reflex', unless there was some psychological factor, i.e.
the idea of eating sea urchin. The flavor is certainly not bizarre, it
is delicious, sort of a sweet sea-taste.

To expand - Uni must be "very very very fresh." If it has the faintest off
smell, generally like ammonia, do not eat it.

Many people dislike it. My personal experience is that I
disliked it for many years, but kept trying it every now and
then. Eventually it grew on me, and it's long since become
one of my favorites.

Personally I'm not a big fan of sea urchin because of the texture. My
own food hang up is "slimy things." In general I've enjoyed all other
types of sushi (oh, also not a big fan of the larger roe).
