We had a great meal at Tokiwa on Bishop Rue or Street or whatever they
say in Canada, eh.

As for me, at O'Bento on Guy St. they have $1 sushi, but I still manage to
drop $30 everytime I go there. And I'm trying to conserve! Tempura entree,
with 12 pieces of nigiri sushi and 2 beers, plus tip.
Mikado on St.Denis is good, had Chirashi there.
Mikado on Laurier expensive and good, had nigiri and maki.
Sakura on rue de la Montagne, medium priced with the best sushi in town. I
use to just order sashimi and a bowl of rice. Use to drop $60 - 75 a pop.
Mostly on beer for myself and Tomo. Excellent shrimp tempura.
Now I go to Miyamoto on Victoria in Westmount and buy some spicy salmon
maki, depanneur beer and go home. Cheap $8 - 15.

A good *takeout only* place that has very reasonable prices (you can
get a 12-piece lunch set for C$15 or eat like a king for C$25), a
Japanese chef and sushi often better than in restaurants that charge
twice as much is
Sushi volant
519 rue Rachel Est (near St-Hubert)
Tel.: 514-523-1085
Open Tue-Sat 11h30-18h00
You have to order at least 5 hours in advance, more on weekends.

Otherwise, Mikado on St-Denis, Miyako on Amherst, and Sakura Garden on
De La Montagne are all good and not so expensive if you order the sushi
platter.
Soto (for New York style sushi) and Tokiwa (more traditional style) are
some of the best restaurants in Montreal, but are more expensive.
Kaizen's Treehouse on Ste-Catherine is supposed to be good too, and
they often have live jazz as well, but I've never been there.

My wife and I enjoyed Tokiwa very much, thanks to your recommendation.
I do tend to like the more traditional Japanese restaurants.

New York style sushi?
> New York style sushi?
That's the term I use to describe sushi that puts more emphasis on
maki than on nigiri, often using non-standard ingredients and shapes.

Add another vote for Tokiwa. We usally eat there two or more times every
visit:) Contrary to the other posters, given the quality and portion size,
we find Tokiwa to be reasonable for sushi. We've eaten at the Treehouse,
and THAT's expensive. Easily half again what we spend at Tokiwa. On the
other hand, if you're looking for something inovative, the price may be
worth it.
Not contrary to my reply. I loved Tokiwa. The piece size was quite good,
and quality was excellent. Masa served as raw mackerel. I asked him, as he
prepared it for us, and he said it was without marinade. Mmmmmm. His
presentation of our dishes were also excellent. He took great care in placing
every item on the geta.
Next time we're in Montreal, we will definately stop in again.

It's on Bishop Rue. We all ordered the sushi & sashimi combo, if memory
serves me. I recall the bill being $149CA, so about $100US for three people.
That's pretty good considering how stuff all three of us were..

Interesting. It's less pejorative than "gaijin sushi", at least. ;)

Cool. Just so you know, it was two years ago when we were there.. and I know
the chef we had has left (I believe). I hope it remains an excellent choice
for sushi,
since I plan to return to Montreal.

There was an assistant chef that left, but Koji is still there :) I think
he takes Saturdays and Mondays off. My son attends McGill, and goes to
Tokiwa weekly. He reports that quality remains excellent.

Sorry Dan, I didn't mean to attribute the cost issue to you. I believe
some other posters indicated a belief that the price was a little high.
Unfortunately, Tokiwa has become a standard to which we compare restaurants
here in the States.... we're often disappointed...
Hey no problem. Glad to hear that Tokiwa is still an excellent choice in
Montreal. I would agree, Tokiwa is in my top 5 best sushi bars that I have
experienced.
I didn't think the price was too high, $33US per person for us seemed pretty
good, considering how much we ate..

I was there a year ago, and the chef, Masa, had indeed moved on. However, I
still had a very good meal. It was the only sushi I was able to have while I
was there. (My wife doesn't eat sushi, and I couldn't leave her at the hotel
too many times!)
We're planning to return in the warmer months this year, as well. I'd also like
to check out Toronto sometime.
