We had 30 people in attendance which is double that of the first meeting,
and I think most everyone had a terrific time. It seems that the only
spoiler was that the restaurant hadn't prepared properly for a group our
size. About 25 of us sat at one long table, and 5 others were sadly
exiled to another table. :(
I know that the 5 sitting at the annexed table are perfectly capable of
entertaining each other, however, we missed their witty repartie. To
further add insult to injury, the restaurant provided only a single
waitress for our entire group. This resulted in reasonable service at
one end of the big table (in the "8" range), mediocre service at the other
end (in the "5" range), and dismal service (in the "2" range) for the annex.
The service also seemed to influence the perception of the food and the
decor. For this reason I will present the results of main table and the
annex seperately.
In the future I will try to prevent this problem by informing the
restaurant about a week and a half in advance that,
1. we are a large group (though they know this from the reservation).
2. we are *all* going to order sushi - so they can prepare their chefs,
and make sure they have a ready supply of fish.
3. we are there to evaluate and rate their restaurant, and the ratings,
and comments from our members will be made public via the BSS mailing
list, the Internet, and restaurant guides such as Zagat's.
3a. I will also point out that restaurants in the past have had their
rating severely marked down because they had not properly prepared for
such a large group, consequently resulting in bad service.
Hopefully, this will go a long way toward solving the service problem.
...but, I digress....

I hope to eventually have an archive set up to make this information
available. I will also include all the comments of our party. Comments
from this outing generally ran along the lines of, "service sucked!, but
the food was great."
Also noted was the unusually large makizushi menu, and the creative
presentation of some of the makis, such as the Caterpillar Maki, the
Spider Maki, and the Scorpion Maki. The incendriary Backdraft Maki was
also noted for it's unusual potentcy. More on all this (more detailed
descriptions) once we get an archive set up. I guess, I'm also going to
have to take more notes at the restaurants too.
On a final happy note, I'd like to welcome Mohan to our group. Mohan had
never had sushi before last night. His great spirit of adventure led him
to join our group at Ginza. Mohan reports that he liked the sushi very
much, that he had a great time, and that he will be joining us for future
outings.
Finally, you should be aware that the BSS mailing list is finally up and
running. If you are not already on it, and wish to subscribe, send
e-mail to:

in the body of your letter write:

obviously you should not type the < and the >, just your e-mail address.
...well, that's all for now. Watch this space for information about the
next meeting which will be held on Thursday, July 28.
Kampai!

OK, I'm curious here... what's "Backdraft Maki"? is it a makizushi with
just wasabi in the middle or is there another reason for its fiery
nature (like spiking the bugger with habanero chilis).
