Anyone know of any good sushi bars in Montreal?
We're staying at the Sheraton Hotel, I think.
If you have three sample points, it would be
appreciated (best,good,cheap) and maybe some
season specialty suggestions. Thanks.

These posts are somewhat dated, but might provide
a starting point:

On May 2, 1998, this was posted to alt.food.sushi:

"This week's free cultural paper "Mirror" features a poll of the
"best" things in Montreal. In the "Best sushi" category, these are the
results:

1- Soto (3527 St-Laurent)
2- Koji Kaizen Sushi Bar (4120 Ste-Catherine W.)
3- Mikado (1731 St-Denis)
4- Katsura (2170 de la Montagne)
5- Sakura (2114 de la Montagne)
tied with
Ginger (16 des Pins E.)

The french version, "Ici", also conducted a poll:

1- Mikado
2- Katsura
3- Azuma (5263 St-Laurent)
tied with
Koji's Kaizen

You'll be sorry.

>2- Koji Kaizen Sushi Bar (4120 Ste-Catherine W.)

Slipping since Koji Ishikawa left for the Tokiwa

>3- Mikado (1731 St-Denis)

Not bad; Ginza is better.

>4- Katsura (2170 de la Montagne)

See comments on Soto.

>5- Sakura (2114 de la Montagne)

Nice place; caters to a large Japanese and Taiwanese clientele

Ugh. Having to listen to new age music, look at videos of crabs
walking along a
beach and watching people staying healthy by drinking beet juice
cocktails
while chain-smoking isn't exactly the best thing in the world. Food
outside of
the sushi is terrible while the sushi is only passable (big, big
quantities of
rice).

>The french version, "Ici", also conducted a poll:

Oh well.

Note that both of these places attempt to cater to the "trendy" crowd,
who go
to places to be seen, not to be dined."

Never been to the above three, but now I'll have to give them a try.
>4- Katsura (2170 de la Montagne)
Quite nice, I go there every couple weeks
>5- Sakura (2114 de la Montagne)
Don't know how it made the list, I went back two weeks ago after
giving up on it two years ago, and found the place to be awefull! One
of the few restaurants in Montreal that I think is truely bad, this
place is worse than Sushi Maki on Bishop!

Yeah, I did do a search before asking and I couldn't find much recently.
And since sushi places come and go often, I wanted to get the most recent
opinions of good places.

I was recommended to try Tokiwa on Bishop street for the best traditional
style sushi.

I've been warned away from Koji's Kaizen, Soto (only for being trendy and
noisey), and Atami.

Thanks for all the info, I think we're going to try Tokiwa.

We went to Koji's Kaizen last fall and were duly impressed.

Nice to see my old posts are still available....

I recently discovered Maiko on Bernard (near Outremont). It is a little
expensive (equivalent to Koji's, nothing compared to Soto) but it is some of
the best sushi I ever had.

For everyday sushi, I still prefer Tokyo Sushi Bar in Old Montreal, on
St-Paul Ouest.
