I'm going to be moving to Illinois soon, to the Danville
(Champaign/Ubana) area. My colleague, who has always lived there, tells
me there are NO sushi bars/restaurants anywhere near. Gack. I'm even
willing to cross state lines -- please someone, tell me I will be able
to feed my habit. And my face.

I know nothing about sushi in Illinois, but you might want to check these
sites wich list sushi restaurants around the world:

http://www.sushi.infogate.de/resindex.htm

or

http://www.cis.unisa.edu.au/~cisjpm/Sushi/Full/USA-illinois.html

This last one lists two places in the Champaign/Ubana region:

Kamakura
715 S. Neil, Champaign 61820; (217) 351-9898

and

Miko (no more info given)

Good luck!

Never fear, I moved away from Champaign about a year ago, but my first
sushi experiences were there. There's a Japanese place called "Kamakura"
on South Neil Street in Champaign that's fairly good. I believe "Miko"
also has sushi, though they have a bit of an identity crisis and are
pretty expensive.

Well, being in Illinois, there are stockyards in Chicago, so steak is very
big out there!! Besides, Steakhouse has more mass appeal than Sushi Bar.

My parents would never go to a "Sushi Bar," but they would go to a
"Japanese Steakhouse" that served sushi.

BTW, my parents are unbelievably against eating raw fish, and it's not
worth the argument, so I don't discuss this with them. They like raw
cherrystone clams and caviar, but I don't bother to point this out. :-)
As we all know, you can easily have a meal of assorted sushi without
eating anything uncooked, you just miss out on some really good stuff.

BTW, the online yellow pages list lots of Japanese Restaurants in
Illinois.

I was in Chicago in January of 96 and I went to a sushi restaurant
that was one of the best I have been to. It was on the southwest
outskirt of Chicago. There are a number of Sushi places there.

Consider yourself lucky that they go to a "Japanese Steakhouse."

Well, a lot of people have a "gross look" on their face when I tell
them that sushi is one of the best foods. They usually have to make a
rude comment and then attempt to stop me by telling me that raw fish
has worms in it. My reply to that is, "If you only knew what was in
the beef and chicken you eat, sushi is a hell of a lot better."

Chuck, have you tried the sushi place in Norwood on Route 1 called
"Mai Place?" It is one of the best places I have been.

There's one guy in my office... whenever I get take out sushi, he walks
by and says, "Parasites." So now I try to eat out more. :)

I DO know what is in beef and chicken... which is exactly why I avoid
both, as well as all other meat... but I do eat sushi, and cooked fish
as well.

The original post was from 1998.. Pretty sure the OP found something
since then. But good to see you're still around, Ken.
