This is what I had last night. I would like to know if some of you think
that this priced right or overpriced.

Tekka Maki
Toro Appetizer (6 pcs)
Bonito Sashimi (3 pcs)
Hamachi Belly Sashimi (3 pcs)
Kanpyo Maki
Uni (2 pcs)
Mirugai (2 pcs)
Ika Mentaiko Temaki

1 Asahi Super Dry (16.9oz)

Total cost = $60.45 before tip.

This was all very good quality sushi/sashimi.

You did order some price stuff like uni, toro, and mirugai.
I bet that toro app costs at least $10 for 6 pieces.

It's also hard to say because he doesn't tell us where he is.
Prices can be very different in different countries (are those
dollars US dollars, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars, Hong
Kong Dollars?), and even in different cities in those countries.

In addition, while one can estimate nigiri & maki prices since they are
usually quoted
a la carte, I have never seen a "per piece" price for sashimi slices.

How's this for a price check? Will you pay that same price to eat it again?
If the answer is yes then it's not too expensive. I've had fresh buri sashimi
at 6 pieces for $25 and I thought it was a bargin. I've also had maguro nigiri
at $2 for a 2 piece set and felt totally ripped off.

JP, if you'd pay to eat it again, I'd say the price was just about right.

There's an "Osaka" along river road, that runs down from
Fort Lee along the Hudson towards Edgewater. Would that be
it? or another place?

I came to about $50.00. But, I'd pay the $60.45 for what you got, because it
sounds like great stuff.

So you probably paid $6 for the beer, %5 in tax, and $14 for
Toro, leaving 7 items, some fairly high-end (belly hamachi, e.g.)
to account for the other $35. $5 a plate isn't cheap, but it's
not terribly expensive.

A $14 appetizer can throw off your internal bill-estimator,
because by the end of the meal you've all but forgotten it.

Take that one plate away and its tax, and you paid about $44+tip.
Not at all out of line for uncommon items of very good quality.

When did you eat there? I have spent the last two weeks in the
Hampton Inn right next door to that sushi bar, and have eaten there
about half of the evenings. Masa is a pretty good chef and the new
kid Alvin is ok but a bit unique in his interactions with patrons.
The quality of the ingredients is very good so I haven't felt I
overpaid on anything yet. The chirashi is to die for, chock full of
good stuff. He has live whole scallops served on the shell and
prepares Aji very nicely, serving the whole fish sliced into sashimi
then ending with a soup made from the head and remainder. The lobster
roll was also very good. Going back next week and I can assure you I
will be there at least two out of the four nights I'll be in town.

From JP - Hotmail:
I was there last Wednesday night (and back again on Friday night). Masa is
very good. I've known him for about 10 years and he never disappoints.
Alvin likes to talk too much, IMHO. He asks too many questions and leans
over the sushi bar to look at you while you are eating. And yes.....the Aji
appetizer is great....I had it Friday.
