The image of thousands of silvery colored bodies flashing in the sun
as they leap upstream is a beautiful one.  Salmon always return
to the place of their birth so they can spawn future
generations.  For anyone who has tasted wild Alaska salmon, the
image of a deep red salmon fillet is equally beautiful.  Alaska
is the natural home for the world's highest quality salmon.
Luckily, Alaskans understand this treasure and have incorporated
conservation laws into the state constitution to ensure the continued
availability of wild-caught, sustainable fresh salmon.
As a meal, wild Alaska salmon is one of those delicacies that can only
be created by nature, incredibly flavorful and healthy at the same
time.  Salmon can be prepared a myriad of ways, but there is no
need to overdo the preparation.  The taste is more than good
enough to stand alone.  A natural health food, salmon is packed
with protein, omega-3 oils, vitamins and minerals.  Multiple
studies have shown the benefits of seafood for cardiovascular as well
as mental health.  The cold waters around the 34,000 miles of
Alaska coastline allow the salmon to reach full health and flavor
potential.  This is what makes Alaska salmon a valued commodity
throughout the world.
Alaska is the only US state to constitutionally mandate that all fish
be harvested according to the sustained yield principle.  State
biologists count the salmon headed upstream to ensure that enough have
passed to ensure the future availability of sustainable fresh
salmon.  After enough fish have passed, fishing is opened on
those particular streams.  Each variety of salmon, be it King,
Sockeye, or Pink; makes its way up the stream that is its
home.   Each variety of fish has different characteristics:
the King, called Chinook by the Inuit, is a huge fish with top quality
meat.  The Sockeye retains its deep red color and distinctive
flavor, while the Pink salmon's delicate flavor and abundance make it
an attractive value.
Trolling vessels catch a small percentage of Alaska salmon; the
majority are caught by gillnetting or purse seining technology.
After a predetermined quota of fish has been caught from any stream or
fishing site, the site is then closed so that the population of
sustainable fresh salmon will continue to grow.  This foresight
will allow continued access to sustainable fresh salmon, the best in
the world.
