Chipotle Mexican Grill added a little spice to its social media Tuesday
when it tried to tempt millennial eaters through its doors by tweeting
sex and drug references.
On Tuesday the company tweeted a seemingly mundane question - 'How many
burritos?' - using Twitter's poll function.
But the apparently whimsical pair of options, 69 and 420, had a deeper
meaning.
Code: The tweet references the 69 sex position and 420 - a code word
from stoner culture that refers to smoking marijuana
'Inappropriate': This user thought the post was a little embarrassing -
but many enjoyed it
The 69 option, of course, referred to the sexual position.
And 420 - pronounced four-twenty - is a slang code for smoking pot.
It's been used in stoner culture since the 1970s, when a group of
high-schoolers coined it after deciding to meet up at 4.20pm every day
to smoke weed.
Innuendo: After a troubled 2015, Chipotle tried to tempt millennials
with an innuendo-laden tweet Tuesday, using code words for drugs and
sex
But while the post - supposedly made by Chipotle social media manager
'Shane' - was derided as 'pretty inappropriate... like someone's Dad
trying to be cool' by Twitter user @joeyalf, the target demographic did
seem to latch onto it.
It received more than 5,000 retweets, as well as a flurry of supportive
comments from people who apparently like to both smoke bowls and eat
them.
'Proud': This user said she was 'proud' to eat at Chipotle
'Great job': Another user said Shane - the supposed name of the
Chipotle social media writer who made the tweet - had done a great job
'You're doing a great job Shane, this tweet; is sick. Will go out of my
way to get Chipotle now,' @benwasahorse wrote.
And @amandawould enthused: 'I'm just so happy and so proud that I just
ate at your establishment thank you god I knew you were real.'
But the star response was from @kifleswing, who demanded more memes:
'Do harambe next,' he said - referring to the slain gorilla who lives
on in internet pictures and jokes.
Chipotle suffered a series of health crises last year due to a series
of health scares, including E Coli being found in some of the company's
food.

Meme next: Another user asked Chipotle to invoke another meme - the
slain gorilla Harambe, who lives on in internet pictures and jokes
