I'm on a golf trip around Montgomery in a few weeks - any
recommendations on good/memorable BBQ resturants in the area? Thanks

I left Montgomery 16 years ago, but they used to have a place called "Dem
Bones" that served tasty ribs.
If you're interested in driving about an hour for some famous ribs, try
Dreamland in either Birmingham (90 miles north) or Tuscaloosa (Dreamland's
home some 70 miles northwest). ABC Sports' announcer Keith Jackson insists
on going to Dreamland every time he goes to Tuscaloosa to call a game. I
just recently ate at their Mobile, Alabama location and the flavor is
awesome.
The paper mill mentioned in the other post is located in Prattville, about
30 miles to the northwest. Since the prevailing winds are from that
direction Montgomery gets to enjoy the aroma. It's just an occasional
problem, and not present every day.

My wife, who knows what she's talking about, has been to Dreamland in
both Tuscaloosa and B'ham. She says that the B'ham location is
nowhere near as good as the original in Tuscaloosa.

I'll be going to Tuscaloosa in March, to visit the U of A and to eat
at Dreamland. Yessss!!!!

Dreamland was my first honest to goodness BBQ experience, something of a
BBQ awakening for me. At first, I was shocked that there was no sticky
sweet red sauce on the ribs... Ok, give me a break, I was young and
foolish, uninitiated to the ways of the Que. I was raised far north of
the Mason Dixon line, far from the Carolina lands of my ancestors. So,
I didn't know didly.

But wow.. they were just plain AWESOME! Ribs, plain white bread, and
some carbonated beverage to watch it all down. Wish I could go back
tomorrow :)

Isn't Dreamland a chain now? Has the quality gone down. Do they offer more dishes, like "wings"?

Yes it's now a chain, but a small one. Last I heard they had outlets in
Birmingham, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa.
I live in Mobile and when they opened they received complaints about no
extra dishes. Now they offer cole slaw, potatoes in some form or another,
maybe some other veggie, maybe even a dessert. Oh yeah, and plenty to drink
(theyt've always done that). I've never eaten at the original in Tuscaloosa
so I can't tell you if the quality's gone anywhere, but I LOVE the flavors
of the ribs, chicken, and sauces at the Mobile, Alabama location.
Someday I'd like to try the home base in Tuscaloosa. I hear it's at the end
of a dirt road, in a building that looks like it's about to fall down, in a
neighborhood you'd be afraid to drive in. Can someone say, "Atmosphere"? I'm
not making this up; my dad took some friends there and one of them was
afraid to get out of the car. It can't be too bad, though, a lot of bigwigs
make the pilgrimage constantly.

all true. they used to keep all the cash in a cigar box under the counter
but i think they got in trouble with the irs and had to be a bit more
professional.

I went to my two best friends' wedding in Birmingham last year, and
the bachelor party started at Dreamlands. Definitely the best ribs
ever.
