That was the extent of his major league *baseball* career.
He also played basketball for the Boston Celtics.

Oh, you young'uns, the things you don't know, why in my day -- the good
old days, of course -- all us kids knew our Western stars. How could you
not know the star of _The Virginian_?

Greetings:
Anyone who makes it to the major leagues in any professional sport
is pretty darn good. "Fair enough" is strictly a relative term!
I'm pretty sure I must have seen Conners when the Cubs came to play
the Dodgers in Brooklyn, but I have no specific memory of him per se.
Anyway, I always considered the height of Chuck Conners' acting
career to be his role on "Roots," the TV miniseries based on Alex
Haley's book.

Steve

Nice try, Becca, but if these young'uns don't know who Chuck Connors is,
they certainly won't be able to fall for a troll which names him, rather
than James Arness, as the star of _The Virginian_.

The UL list of movie stars with former porno flick experience has been
long, with Sylvester Stallone apparently atop the marquees, both UL and
T.
Barbra Striesand always crops up, and Chuck Conners seems a regular
fixture (but unproven).
"The Truth" is as follows:
In the 50s, Candy Barr, a well known exotic dancer, made a famous and
widely seen B&W epic costarring an extremely (well Cinemascopicly) well
endowed jackass. Ther is no evidence that her costar appeared later in
a Hollywood epic, "Francis The Talking Mule" (and not in the Donald
O'Connor part).

Nope. Not confused at all. I was born and brought up in the
Boston area and Chuck Connor's brief career with the Celtics is
well known around here. On November 5, 1946, at Matthews Arena
(now home of Northeastern University's athletic teams) he became
the first player ever to shatter a backboard in the NBA -- in the
first Celtics game ever played.
Here's the official NBA site with the cite:

The Boston Sports Museum, in Lowell, Mass., has one of the Rifleman's
cowboy hats on display along with its Celtics memorabilia.
Gene Conley is also well known around Boston because he played for
both the Red Sox and the Celtics *during the same years*. To my
knowledge, that's never been done before or since.

Above a signature much longer {ahem!} than the actual posting, we are asked:
> This may be a stupid question, but who the hell is Chuck Conners?
You've probably seen him up in the big numbers of the UHF dial or the small
hours of the morning even though you didn't realize it.
The late Chuck Connors (computers being damnably literalist devices, your
failure to spell it just so undoubtedly frustrated your search for
information) was a prolific TV and movie actor of the 1950s and 60s (with
character roles now and then nearly until his death a few years ago). He was
best known for a late 50s-early 60s series called "The Rifleman." Previously
he'd spent a couple of years as a baseball player -- some sites have his
stats under "Chuck," others under his real name of "Kevin Joseph."
I'd never heard the porno rumor, and (being neither a fan of that genre nor
an expert on the secret lives of movie stars) can't contribute anything to it
besides the canonical caution that such stories abound and should be taken
with the proverbial grain of salt.

I think he meant that playing for teams in the same town (Boston) hadn't
been done since. Although, Sanders playing for both Atlanta teams kinda
takes care of that.

Some folks say it was a miracle. God suddenly appeared and
knocked the next pitch clean out of the ballpark.
But I think it was just a lucky swing.
In the book "The Sewing Circle", about Hollywood lesbians, there is a great
photo of a topless Joan Crawford embracing another woman. The negatives of the
pornos she made were bought, and reportedly destroyed by her studio when she
started to hit the big time, however.
The book is a great read, by the way.

This is not in the same category, but is related enough for me to
sneak in a favorite bit of trivia:
Bill Sharman, the NBA Hall-of-Famer from the Boston Celtics, was
a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers system. He was called up in 1951
and on September 27, 1951, was a member of the Dodgers and sitting
on their bench when they were visiting the Braves in Boston. He
had at this point never played in a major league game.
From _The Rules and Lore of Baseball_, by Rich Marazzi, p. 67:
"After a violent argument precipitated by a play at the plate
involving the Braves' Bob Addis, umpire Frank Dascoli eventually
ejected the entire Dodgers bench. Sharman was later shipped back
to the minors and never appeared in a big league game. The
bench ejection made Sharman the only player to ever have been
thrown out of a major league game although having never played
in one."
Try that one at your next sports trivia fest. It's hard enough
to imagine how a MLB player could be ejected without ever playing,
but it's an interesting twist that the only one to whom it
happened was a member of the NBA Hall of Fame.
Take it easy,
