Howdy y'all:

I was watching a documentary earlier today on terrorism and they
mentioned that Entebbe thing in which a plane was hijacked and taken to
Uganda back in the 1970's. This got me thinking about Idi Amin; I
remember once a teacher of mine in high school mentioned that Idi Amin
supposedly refrigerated some of the bodies of people that he had
murdered so he could eat them. Is this true? It sounds a little like
propaganda to me, but I guess it never hurts to check. Sorry if this is
too political for this newsgroup, but hey the guy has been out of power
for ages now and dictators aren't the most loveable people in the world.
:-).

Idi Amin, though a brutal, even genocidal dictator (after the tinpot
model common in newly independent former colonies 'round the world),
was not known to be a cannibal. You're thinking of Bokassa, who
proclaimed himself Emperor for Life in what is now the Central African
Republic:
http://webusers.anet-stl.com/~civil/dvafricacfrcannibal.html

As I recall, when he was run out of the country (with the help of
French commandos), they allegedly found body parts in the fridge. (Not
borne out by the web page above, but who knows.)

(Oddly, when one searches on "idi amin" and then within results for
"cannibal" using infoseek -- lots of links to a page of lawyer jokes.)

However, Amin did enjoy presenting himself to the media as a caricature
of an African leader. He threatened or insinuated that he had eaten his
enemies. He allowed or encouraged rumors to that effect. He got some
kind of perverse enjoyment out of creating this "savage" image of himself
for the amusement of Europeans, believing it gave him the upper hand
because they would underestimate his cunning. And it worked. For example,
_Mother Jones_ describes him as a "cannibalistic" crazy man who is
"reported to have" eaten one of his sons. I think it would be safe to
say that while there is no evidence that Amin was a cannibal, it *was*
and is widely believed, partly due to his own propaganda.

Bokassa's supposed to be holding a few choice pieces of human meat. The same
was said about Haile Selaisse, only that he fed it to his Lions.
In a way they all ate people.
I recently read an article on Idi Amin now residing in Saudi Arabia. If
anything he seems to be craving for oranges, eating and drinking them by the
kilo.
For those who are interested: Chuck E. Weiss' new album includes a groovy
little track entitled 'Do you know what I Idi Amin'.

The version of the Idi Amin/`fridge story that I collected in the late 70s
(perhaps via the then infant "Mother Jones" magazine) was that Dear Jolly
Old Idi kept the _heads_ of his more interesting victims under
refridgeration. When particularly vexed he would open up the doors and
lecture the severed heads on the political errors of their ways.

I don't recall hearing this one, but it is apparently famous enough to
have made it into "Our Dumb Century" from the Onion (www.theonion.com -
For those who don't know, the Onion is an irreverent parody.). It was in
an article from a fictitious 1977 issue and indicates that the legend
is/was pretty well known.

Of interest:
http://somerset.nando.net/newsroom/ntn/world/070496/world17_16920.html
It's mentioned in one sentence how he was a cannibal, in a context that "it
should be obvious to everyone"

It says a lot more about it here:
http://www.whitfield.st-louis.mo.us/teachers/fish/projects/1/idiamin.htm
Says that Amin once commented that human meat was a little more salty than
leopard meat.
