That rumor's been going around almost since the beginning of the show.
As far as I know, Mark-Paul Gosselaar is still hale and hearty and
appearing in really bad television shows. The Internet Movie Database
(http://www.imdb.com/) says he's made two made-for-tv movies in 1997.
My own experience with this rumor is in two parts.
Scene One: sitting in my parents' den around 1991 watching television
with my little sister, who's of an age to appreciate "Saved by the Bell".
She flips to it, and says, "Did you hear? Zach was in a car accident
and died--they'renot going to make any more shows after this season
because they don't want to replace him." I say, "Oh, that's awful", and
wonder to myself at the cosmic balance of Great Good coming out of
Terrible Tragedy.
Scene Two: a couple years later, again sitting in my parents' den
watching tv with my little sister. Again we light upon "Saved by the
Bell". I say, "Wait, I thought that guy died." Polly responds
witheringly, "That was just a *rumor*. Everyone knows it didn't really
happen. Duh."

When I was a teenager (a long time ago) the big rumor was that Bob Denver,
(Best known for playing Gilligan on Gilligans Island, and Maynard J. Krebs
in Dobie Gillis, had been killed when a radio had accidently fallen into
the bathtub he was in at the time. This was supposed to be "absolutley
true", even though I pointed out that there was nothing in the news about
it. "They want to keep it a secret so people won't stop watching the
reruns." was the reply.
When he appeared in several game and talk shows later on, it was
supposed to be a "double", found in a "look a like contest".

Another variation on "the Beaver was killed in 'Nam" legend. This one
isn't true either.

This is probably based on the..ummm...actual(?) event of Gilligan becoming
invisible when being struck by lightning while bowling on the island.
Oh *lordy* am I scared that that factoid was able to arise to the
conscious layers of my brain...

About a year ago, a person on another newsgroup (no, not THAT newsgroup so
all of you who know Maggie's dirty secret can stop snickering to
yourselves) emailed me to request my anthropological expertise (such as it
is). Apparently s/he is a regular on a Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac
newsgroup being plagued by a rumor-mongerer who cried faux Stevie (I
don't know whether she was presumed dead or simply afflicted by bad sitcom
plot disorder) and further claimed that by freeze-framing video tapes from
a performance starring the real Stevie and a faux Stevie, one could take
two measurements and compare the ratios of them to prove that these were
not the same person.

Related to this was the common rumour that in later Fleetwood Mac videos
(Tango in the Night, in particular), any close-up of Stevie Nicks was taken
from videos shot some years earlier. The reason given was her vanity.
It must be said that the close ups in TitN were of her face alone, and so
didn't show up any discrepancy in her clothing. Also the close up shots
seemed to coincide with when she was not actually singing, so they did not
even need to worry about lip-synching (it occurs to me that this might be a
good thing anyway for even 'honest' video editing)
I never heard the theory proved or disproved, but thought it was a lot of
hard work to go through, when a soft focus shot would achieve much the
same.

Maynard *G.* Krebs. Maybe you're too young to have ever seen it...
