And when they get here, everybody's gonna jump for joy.

I have a friend whose last name is Quinn. She told
me that the people who share her last name, spelled
with two "n"s, tend to be Roman Catholic, or of R.C.
background. Meanwhile those who spell it with only
one "n" tend to be of protestant faith.
She also said that this is what she had always heard,
but wasn't sure if it was true. All the Quinns she
knows happen to be of R.C. background, but she doesn't
know any Quins.
I was wondering if there was anyone out there who knows
whether this is true or not, or if there are any
Quin(n)s out there who can enlighten me further.
Thank you in advance,
Denise Angeloni.
P.S. You can e-mail me or post, I have no preference.

I've heard this about my last name also. The root Irish surname is
Mullein (O'Mullein or Ni Mullein, depending on gender). Family lore
has it that "Mullen" is the spelling used by Irish protestants, and
"Mullin" used by Irish Catholics. I've never met anyone who uses the
"i" spelling.
Aside from my family, I'd never heard any correlations made between
orthography of surnames and religion until I read this post.

The religious background of British MPs Joyce Quin and Chris Mullin tend
to bear the above theories out, but not in a statistically significant
way. However, I once had a boss called Dave Quinn, who was an Ulster
Protestant. And my Catholic friend Seamus O'Semtex^WMullen is another
counter-example.
