I just heard a new (to me) tale. One of my wife's cow orkers told her
that a hungover Annie Oakley once shot an apple of the head of proto-Nazi
Adolph Hitler when he was a young soldier. The story sounded apocryphal
to us. Has anyone heard this one before?

I looked into it. I found a reference to a May 10, 1998 New York Times
article at http://www.metro2000.net/~stabbott/AHnytArticle.htm
which mentions Kaiser Wilhelm II volunteering to let a hungover Annie
Oakley shoot a cigar out of his mouth in Berlin in 1889. This sounds
like a bastard child of this event and the William Tell story with the
Kaiser mutating into Hitler.

Oakley lived 1860-1926. She toured with the Wild West Show from 1884 till
1901 when she was injured in a train accident. After she recovered, she
continued giving shooting demonstrations. The Wild West Show ran till
1913. I'm not sure if she rejoined the Wild West Show after her accident.
Hitler lived 1889-1945, so he could possibly have seen her, but
probably not as a soldier during the war.

Anyway, making a short story long, has anyone heard this one? Does it
sound like crap to you? Is this thread dead since I mentioned Hitler?

Greetings:

There is no documentation of Annie Oakley ever shooting an apple
off of the head of a young Adolf Hitler. But the question of who let
Annie shoot a cigar from his mouth recently came up on the History
Channel's "Great American History Quiz" program (or some title like
that). The choices, if I remember correctly, were President Theodore
Roosevelt, Czar Nicholas II, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. If there were any
real evidence of that Hitler story, it would have made a far juicier
question and that History Channel special would have used it!

Regards,
Steve

A lot of stuff...

Actually, Onkel Adi was a real nobody both before and after the first
big one, so it quite highly unlikely he ever had a chance to see old
Willy. I mean, Onkel Adi was a bum in Wien after he got out of the
hospital after getting his lungs burnt in 1917.
The only reason he moved to Germany and into politics the Wien art
school told his works were shit... actually I have been turned down
by a few art schools as well, so I might have a future as a maniac.

And yes, your question is dead as you mentioned Onkel Adi, because
the 'merkins think if you do not discuss an issue it goes away.
Therefore you have all kinds of idiots telling gospel truths such as
the A.Oakley stuff because you can not get any facts over Onkel Adi,
and all the rest of the idiots are free to believe them because the
'merkins have no fucking clue about history because they deny half of
the facts.

So where did the daughter of Mata Hari die?
