A friend of mine's sister told me that she saw a piece of a male models
privates in the underwear section of the Sears Catalog. I haven't seen
it myself, and I've heard about this for years. Does Sears do this every
year or so for publicity?

Just wondering

Yep. And if you were there, you would have also herad about the picture
of Richard Gere with a gerbil's tail sticking out of his shorts in
_People_ magazine too!

Sheesh. I musta been drunk. I don't even remember mentioning his sister.

But anyhow, there was (and I saw it) what appeared to be a penis head
dangling from the bottom of a longish pair of boxer shorts. It became
well-known and led to a popular (at least on KFAT) country song about
"The man on page 602[or whatever]", the gist being that he presented
too conspicuous an alternative to less dramatically hung guys.

Give it a "T", Peter.

Boy, I'll tell ya, even saying it "appeared to be" a penis is being
way too kind. I saw the catalog, it made big news at the time, and
everyone knew what page "the penis" was on. So we all go to a friend's
house, open up the catalog to the proper page, and the conversation
went something like "So which guy is it?" "ummm, this one?" "no, I
don't see anything there.....what about this one here?" "no, they said
boxer shorts, silly....hey, look here!" "where?" "where?""see? right
here.....you have to look _real_ _carefully_...." and sure enough,
there was the tiniest hint of a slightly lighter smudge just at
the bottom of one leg hole......

It sounded like a giant publicity stunt to sell the Sear's catalog...
wasn't this right around the time they started charging for them?

Hmm. sounds interesting that Sears might pull that stunt. Sounds more
like the antics of Vitoria's Secret or Fredrick's of Hollywood kind
of thing. Wonder how much publicity VS or FoH generates with their
scantily clad (and frequently visible) models, both male and female.

Note that Sears used the same picture the following year (and possibly
the year after that, but I can't say with any certainty) -- with the
triangular light patch airbrushed out (or otherwise removed). This,
of course, proves nothing.

(note that when I say "the following year", I mean "a subsequent catalog")

Of course, there was the picture in "People" last year, supposedly
showing off Patrick Swaze (sp)'s best feature. hmm

I don't know if they do it every year or so, but I had a copy of the
Sears catalog that showed a young man modeling boxer shorts -- along with
something else that peeked through the hem! This was around 1976. I saved
the catalog around for a few years to show to "unbelievers."

It seems that Sears, at the time, claimed that it was "only a shadow"
since all of their male underwear models were, by contract, required
to wear panty hose during the shooting.

!!! That sounds like a UL in itself. B'way Joe shouldn't have
taken such flack.

Who will be the first to find the male underwear model with a run
in his leg?

Hmmm. They made us wear pantyhose when we spent two weeks above the snowline
in Mt Ruapahu (sp ? God, Maori names can be a pain to remember), in order to
keep warm. Perhaps the studios they shot the photos in was very cold at the time
?
