For those few who might never have heard it, basically, a (favorite
sportscar) can be purchased for a song, from a local garage, because
it was found recently in the woods, the driver having expired in it
with the windows up, and had spent the summer fermenting in the
upholstery. ("Nice car you got...sure does stink, though!")
In any case, the car in the version I experienced, in the early '70s,
was a "brand new 'Vette" which had been found in a local patch of
woods with the driver, or his remains, behind the wheel. There was
even a local garage that had the car, and you could buy it for
$500...although nobody I know of actually went to see the car, nobody
knew the person in it, and the car has apparently vaporized.
My question is, did anyone else hear this classic, and what were the
particulars, if you did?
----------
In a sidebar, this actually DID happen to a close friend, although the
car was a clunker, he committed suicide in it, after telling everyone
he was going to another state, and was months later found in the
vehicle.

I've never encountered this one in the wild, but it's featured in four of
the three Brunvand books (_The Vanishing Hitchhiker_, _The Choking
Doberman_, _The Mexican Pet_, and _The Baby Train_).
There's also a nice older version at:

There's a moral somewhere in here. I'm absolutely sure of it.

Funny. I did hear it in Germany around late 70's, maybe early 80's (hey
it's far too long ago to give exact timing). It was a Porsche in my case.
The rest of the details exactly like in your case (up to the details of
the local garage, the woods and the no-one-nows-name-of-driver details).
bye, Georg

Nope. It has 5.

I encountered this same legend in Germany many years ago with a Porsche,
looked high and low and never could find the "discounted" car.
