AIDS is a deadly disease that we're only beginning to understand. Diseases
of this sort typically evolve a folklore around themselves (eg. Typhoid Mary,
sex with virgins to cure venereal diseases, etc.). Clearly, AIDS is well on
its way to developing its own. The fact that its two most efficient means of
transfer are certain kinds of sex and unsterile needle usage (ie. IV drug
use in many people's minds) has also fueled this trend by lending itself to
traditional obsessions with sex and decadence and drugs. This all came up for
conversation the other day with a friend of mine who mentioned a number of
celebrities, all known for being a bit on the wild side. Can anybody
confirm/deny/add to these rumors (since adding to them is always so
entertaining)?

David Bowie
Jon Bon Jovi
Perry Farrell (of Porno for Pyros, formerly of Jane's Addiction)

Actually, the Perry Farrell one started when "Ritual De Lo Habitual" came out
and people said you could see his HIV test results in the sculpture on the
front cover. That's sounds like a rumor to me, but all I have is the tape,
so I can barely make out the title, much less the small print in the
background.

Yep...Michael Stipe of R.E.M. I've been hearing this one since about 1986,
after his godawful appearance while guesting w/the Golden Palominos in
NYC got the whole thing rolling..and it hasn't stopped yet. Sure as the
sun comes up in the East, or a bear shits in the woods, SOMEONE will post
to the R.E.M. mailing list/rec.music.rem/alt.music.alternative/rec.music.misc.,
etc., etc., etc. and ask us all "Did you hear that Michael Stipe is HIV+?"
(Yes, we have, and no, as far as any of us know, it isn't true...granted,
he looks pretty rough these days, but--having seen the man on his native
stomping grounds--I suspect that it's by design rather than happenstance due
to illness.) EVERYBODY who has any serious interest at all in R.E.M. is so
sick of this one that they could scream...or, better yet, commit some truly
fiendish act of mayhem on the ignoramus who sent the @#$%^&*! post!!!!!
Sorry...just had to say that.

As for Perry Ferrell, I heard about that one over Halloween 1991...granted,
his lifestyle is such that it's always a possibility (same goes w/Michael,
BTW, but for slightly different reasons & in a slightly different way), but
I kinda doubt it. I think I've even heard it bandied about once or twice
about Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, but (in spite of his past drug use--BTW, I
understand he was *extremely* careful about keeping his needles clean, not
sharing them, etc.) I don't think that one's true, either.

Basically, until such time as any or all of the above either 1) come forward
and 'fess up (as did Holly Johnson, formerly of Frankie Goes to Hollywood),
or 2) keel over from said disease or a related side effect, I'm inclined to
put these all down under the same heading: "Believed False".

RE: Perry Farrell's immune status supposedly revealed on cover
of "Ritual de lo Habitual": I read about this someplace;
apparently a little slip from a medical test, reading "Positive",
is part of the sculpture. However, this turned out to be from
his girlfriend's pregnancy test (according to an interview
I read around that time). I think they got married.

Michael Stipe gets mentioned a lot, too. It's false-see the rec.music.rem FAQ.

I'm going to sleep now. I'll post some New Scientist stuff on the deadly
nature of sucrose and the intensive care ward for a tree tomorrow.
