Ah... they don't. There's no garage or parking lot at the Takoma
station. Commuters DO walk to the station.
My wife takes the Metro from Takoma to go to work every morning, and
I've used it often enough myself to be absolutely sure of this --
there's no Metro garage, and the only parking lot is one of those
little Kiss-&-Ride drop-off/pick-up places.
Check WMATA.com for yourself -- "short-term parking" means the Kiss &
Ride, which has maybe twenty spaces, if that.

Not really. They're both right on the District line. Yeah, Silver
Spring is one station farther out on the Red Line than Takoma, but
that's not a straight line -- it loops east to hit Fort Totten and
Takoma before swinging back to Silver Spring, and besides, Takoma
isn't in Takoma Park, it's in the District.
By road, Silver Spring is easier to reach -- you just go straight out
Georgia Avenue or 16th Street. To get to Takoma Park you have to veer
off onto Piney Branch Road, or get out to New Hampshire Avenue.

there are 58 parking spaces at the station.
Of course if that website is wrong, it won't be the first time.

They are, but the District line isn't equidistant from downtown.
Silver Spring is near the north corner.

I've walked to both from downtown. Takoma Park takes me two hours;
Silver Spring two and a half.

Fifty-eight parking spaces with a four-hour limit. And they're
usually empty when I go by there.

Where are you defining as "downtown"?
