I was a at party the other night where the host had a copy of the
videotape "The Little Mermaid." Someone said that the disney artist who
drew the cover art for the case was slated to be fired and as a revenge
tactic, he drew a one of the spires of the castle in the background in
the shape of a penis. We all looked at the cover and decided that one
of the spires was suspicious looking. Does anyone have any information
about this?

Believe it or not, this story, if not 100% true, is at least firmly
grounded in reality. I have, however, heard the story two ways: The way Kirk
relates (i.e. the animator was going to be fired and got his revenge), and also
that the animator was fired because he placed the penis in the tower, hoping it
would be a private joke. The picture is not only on the video tape case, but
also the original movie poster.
How do I know about this? I used to work at a Wal-Mart store in the
electronics department. Shortly after the video version of Little Mermaid
was released we recieved a memo from Walt Disney Home Video stating that there
was some, "hidden unappropriate artwork" in the tape's case. If we got any
complaints from customers who had bought the tape, we were to give them an
address to send for a free replacement case. Needless to say, after we all
read the memo, my co-workers and I each grabbed a copy of the tape and scoured
the artwork to find the hidden picture. Four of us independantly found the
picture.

I first heard about people complaining about the art - that the
spires were phallic symbols - and I thought "great, here we go again".
My wife looked at the artwork and discovered that the spire that is dead
center in front of the castle isn't symbolic; it's a phallus. This is
apparently the case only on the video cassette artwork, and not on the
movie posters.

Don't know anything about disgruntled artist tho...

I was reading this group when all the stories about the
tarantula-filled cactus were hashed out. For personal
reasons, I now need either a summary of the variations
of the story, or if you have a file with all the variations,
you could just send the whole thing. . . .

Email, please.
