I am 99.9% positive that I saw a 20/20 special on TV about exploding bic lighters around 1988 or so. Appartently welders have had this happen a couple of times over the years and have been warned not to have lighters in thier clothing on the job. From what I remember, it's not really a frequent thing, but it has happened enough to update safety regulations.

I've seen it happen - when I was a firefighter, one of my crewmembers on a brush fire had an ember alight on his trouser pocket, burn through and blow up the lighter he carried.
It doesn't happen often, but hey, lets be careful out there.
