I hope some of you `old guys' get a kick out of this :)
[Fwd: FW: I'm not in Korea Anymore]
First Realizations That You're Not at Osan AB, ROK Anymore:
- It's 0201 hrs, Sunday morning, and you're still downtown
- You can slam 3 beers before your friends can finish their first
- Mmmmmm....Miss Lee's McDonalds Burgers......
- You can't stop saying, "When I was at Osan.." or "At Osan I/we.."
- The thought of hearing, EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE...CONDITION
BLUE...... MOPP 4!!" makes you think, "Ahhh, those were the good
ol' days.."
- Remembering your first Soju Experience brings a smile to your
face
- Coming through the main gate late at night isn't as
exciting...you don't feel like Harrison Ford in the "Fugitive"
running from Town Patrol, ducking into alleys, looking around
corners just trying to "make it"
- Your co-workers think that drinking beer at 1601 hrs, on a
workday, in the office, is absurd
- You leave work by 1630 hrs everyday
- No water-main breaks, No Power or Water Outages
- DEROS doesn't mean anything to you anymore
- Your wife/husband/kids are starting to get on your nerves again
- At home, you actually have to leave the room to get a beer
- You "can" find something to do
- Don't know what you did with your Unit "Coin"
- Can't find a bottle of Jinro Soju Anywhere
- Fresh Air
- Think to yourself, "Damn, I shoulda bought that when I was over
there!"
- Haven't thought or muttered the following: "I hate this !@#$%^&
place!" or "This !@#$%^& place sucks!"
- You're now using the items that used to be in your
mobility/personal bag
- The thought of walking somewhere is simply "ridiculous"
- Your backpack is stuffed in the closet somewhere
- During the week, you're in bed asleep by 2100 hrs
- On the weekends, you're in bed asleep by 2100 hrs
- Wake up for work and you're "sober"
- Leave work and you're "sober"
- Malls
- You ask the lady bartender for an "OB" and she looks at you
funny
- No one knows what a "Freedom Bird" is..
- Haven't seen a "Patriot Missile" battery in a while
- Buy all the liquor you want
- Sunday NFL is actually "on" Sunday
- Have a craving for Kim-Chi or Bulgoki
- Taco Bell
- Nobody appreciates a good game of "Bones" on Friday's after work
- When you start to think, "Korea wasn't so bad..." or "12 Months
went by fast.."
- Come to the conclusion: Soju really "is" the BOMB!!!

Remember the first time you heard the U-2? Sounded
like every plane on the base was taking off at once.
You look towards the flight-line and see a lone black
sailplane climbing up into the air.
Banging on the door of the Boogie House at 7 in the
morning to get Ma Boogie to open up early...
Looking on in amazement as Korean officers put
mayonnaise on their pizza's...
Seeing those same officers slapping their subordinates
in the basement of HTACC...
Turning your nose up at kimchee when you first get there
but looking forward to it as you await your main course
later on...
I could go on.
IYAS9YAS!

THAT brings back all sorts of memories.
Army folks need to add to that:
"Quickie" (sex in 20-30 minutes),
Oscar [tm] (the cheap champagne),
Nightblast alerts (old 2ID bed check between 0001-0600 to see if 80% of
unit strength is in bed),
walking across the street in shower shoes to use the latrine or shower,
Class A passes and overnight passes (Class A passes being good only from
0601-2400 in the local area),
Going "downrange" to Itaewon (the "foreigners" district near USAG
Yongsan).
Who can come up with more US Forces Korea "cultural oddities"?

OOOOoooh! OOOOOHHH!!! I can! <G>
Short time/Long time: See Quickie above, although Short Time was typically
one hour, and long time was all night. Kettle: Soju and Fruit Juice (I still
remember those nights, or rather, some of them) SpeedBumps of the DMZ: The
light inf. guys at the border. Also my unit, the 2ND ENG BN, who was
destroyed to one lone survivor during the festivities way back when, since we
were used so that everyone else could escape.
1st/2nd/3rd DAT: our pet name for 1st Tank, etc.
Chang Mal: Top of the mountain, where Camp Castle is located.
Other terms that should strike chords... The Indian, Turtle ditch, weapons
card, Getting "rodded off downrange", Warm winters at -10, MoonPies, cheese
ramen, ROK Rangers, KATUSA Sgts/E4, Yobo, Hadashi service, TA50 Alley,
Terminators, Alley girls, rat on a stick, Hadgima- special puppies, MPRC, etc

This is scary. I was running the ville at Osan in 'seventy and 'seventy-one. I
can still recognize some of the place names - Argon Alley, local landmarks -
binjo ditches, food delicaties - winter kimchee, recreational activity - short
time. Fortunately most of the conversation is floating over my head, and in
twenty-eight years maybe if you are lucky will float over your head as well.
I am quite sure place smells just a bad as when I was there and that the OB still
tastes like formaldehyde. You didn't sip on your beer. You drank in one gulp to
get it past your tastbuds as quicly as possible.

You wouldn't know where I could get info on that?
That was my Dad's unit. And I would like to know what happened.
He gave some great and horrifing stories of life as a POW. But
not much of the greater details.

Cars - Everybody has one. Seoul now has 14,000,000 residents. On a
daily basis (1996) 27,000,000 cars, trucks, and buses travel through
the city.
Seoul - E' Taewon is still a tourist trap. But it has gone EO.
Pakistanis, Nigerians, Chinese, Russian, and a host of other county
people are in the area. Signs that used to be English/Hangul are now
four and five languages.
Urbanization - From about Munsan (North of Seoul) Pyongtaek (Cp
Humphreys) almost all of the farms are gone.
Highways - MSR 1 is now HWY 1. Eight lanes from Seoul to Taejon.
Four major highways, three under construction, and cars already in
place to ride on them (See first item).
Beer - You almost can't by OB any more (Didn't see a Crown during my
lastest tour). OB is now making about 8 different beers. From Lager
(wanabees) to "Lite" beer.
Soju - Don't have to skim the top any more. But it will still "ROK
your world."
