I am interested in the topic of circumcision in the military --
particularly incidences of forced or coerced or nonconsensual circumcision
of military personnel.

Does this happen? Do you have story or other information?

I never heard of coherced circumcision but volutary was offered and quite
a few sailors took advantage of this on westpac cruises. A friend of mine
had it done and also had a reaction to the anasthesia (local) they used.
He spent the entire westpac cruise with a sore ----

In the US Navy, circumcision would only rarely considered a
medically neccessary procedure. And it would not be forced onto active
duty members. Some (all?) of the hospitals might offer it for newborn
chlidren, but only when explicity requested by the parents. That is more
a matter left up to the individual doctor to offer it to the parents as
an option. Considering the mild (compared to say, abortion) contraversy
that surrounds the issue, that policy has quite likely been changed since
I last had firsthand knowledge of it.

I remember reading a paper many years ago on the pros and cons
circumcision and one small section was with regard to a higher level of
fungal infection of uncircumcised vs circumcised ground troops in the
Pacific theater of operations. I seem to remember than those with
recurant infections were circumcised and this was one of many reasons that
circumcision was so routinely practiced in the U.S. in the years following
World War II.

Sorry, I cannot recall the reference.

Having just left the Army, and spending my entire military career
working at Tripler Army Medical Center's OB Section, I feel as if I
could answer in regards to newborns.

The parents of Newborn males are offered the option of having their
child circumcised if they so desire. If they do want their child
circumcised, they are required to attend a class that discusses the
possible benefits and disadvantages of circumcision, and if they still
want to go through with it, they are required to sign a consent form.

The medical staff is VERY careful about making sure that consent has
been given before performing a circumcision, as the legal
ramifications are quite... ugly, otherwise.

Circumcision may once have been an entrance requirement for West Point,
according to something I read. Can anyone confirm?

When I was in basic - Ft. Carson, CO Nov - Jan 66, 67 - I was admitted
to the base hospital with the Flu. The guy in the next bed was there
for a voluntary circumcision. He was discharged after a few days and
given a recuperative leave. He just wonder what the hell for, he
couldn't do anything! They would not let him delay the leave until
things were healed up. Just a little frustrating, I guess!!!
